Skin aging is a slow multifactorial process influenced by both internal as well as external factors. Ultra-violet radiations (UV), diet, smoking and personal habits are the most common environmental factors that affect skin aging. Fat contents and fibrous proteins as collagen and elastin are core internal structural components. The direct influence of UV on elastin integrity and health is centr...

A characteristic feature of liver cirrhosis is the accumulation of large amounts of connective tissue with the prevailing content of type I collagen. Elastin is a minor connective tissue component in normal liver but it is actively synthesized by hepatic stellate cells and portal fibroblasts in diseased liver. The accumulation of elastic fibers in later stages of liver fibrosis may contribute t...

Elastin-derived peptides display a wide range of biological activities in a number of normal and transformed cells but their involvement in angiogenesis has not been reported. In the present study, we show that kappa-elastin and VGVAPG hexapeptide elastin motif accelerated angiogenesis in the chick chorio-allantoic membrane in an in vivo model. They also stimulated pseudotube formation from hum...

Following penetrating injury of the skin, a highly orchestrated and overlapping sequence of events helps to facilitate wound resolution. Inflammation is a hallmark that is initiated early, but the reciprocal relationship between cells and matrix molecules that triggers and maintains inflammation is poorly appreciated. Elastin is enriched in the deep dermis of skin. We propose that deep tissue i...

Connective tissue nevi are types of hamartoma with increased collagen in which the amounts of elastin may vary. This report introduces an 18-year-old case with various nodular lesions in upper thigh area. Performed biopsy suggested the diagnosis of collagenoma which is a sub-type of connective tissue nevus.

In this study, one- and two-dimensional NMR experiments are applied to uniformly (15)N-enriched synthetic elastin, a recombinant human tropoelastin that has been cross-linked to form an elastic hydrogel. Hydrated elastin is characterized by large segments that undergo "liquid-like" motions that limit the efficiency of cross-polarization. The refocused insensitive nuclei enhanced by polarization...

RATIONALE Elastin is a ubiquitous extracellular matrix protein that is highly organized in heart valves and arteries. Because elastic fiber abnormalities are a central feature of degenerative valve disease, we hypothesized that elastin-insufficient mice would manifest viable heart valve disease. OBJECTIVE To analyze valve structure and function in elastin-insufficient mice (Eln(+/-)) at neona...

Homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations in fibulin-4 (FBLN4) lead to autosomal recessive cutis laxa type 1B (ARCL1B), a multisystem disorder characterized by significant cardiovascular abnormalities, including abnormal elastin assembly, arterial tortuosity, and aortic aneurysms. We sought to determine the consequences of a human disease-causing mutation in FBLN4 (E57K) on the cardiovascul...

The aorta is the largest artery in the body, yet processes underlying aortic pathology are poorly understood. The arterial media consists of circumferential layers of elastic lamellae and smooth muscle cells (SMCs), and many arterial diseases are characterized by defective lamellae and excess SMCs; however, a mechanism linking these pathological features is lacking. In this study, we use lineag...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Laser-assisted end to end vascular anastomosis of an elastin heterograft to native artery may prevent problems associated with currently available vascular synthetic grafts and conventional suture anastomosis. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 21 anastomoses in the carotid arteries of 7 domestic swine were performed with an 800 nm laser and an albumin ste...
