In the title inner salt, C(16)H(20)N(2)O(8)·H(2)O, two of four carboxyl groups are deprotonated, while the two imine groups are protonated. The two imino-diacetate groups are located on the same side of the benzene ring plane. Extensive inter-molecular O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds occur in the crystal.

Esculetin (6,7-dihydroxycoumarin) and its diacetate exhibited a marked inhibitory effect on Newcastle disease virus replication in cell cultures at concentrations of 36 microM and 62 microM, respectively. New powerful hypervalent iodine(V) oxidants, tosylate and mesylate derivatives of 2-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX), were prepared by the reaction of IBX with the corresponding sulfonic acids.
