By mimicking the hydrophobicity and miniature protrusions of the lotus leaves using a monolayer of non-fluorinated hydrophobic polymer and functionalized nanoparticles, respectively, we have developed a permanent nanocoating to create ultrahydrophobic fibers/textiles with excellent water repellency and self-cleaning ability.

Probing the surface morphology of microthin fibers such as naturally occurring biofibers is essential for understanding their structural properties, biological function, and mechanical performance. The state-of-the-art methods for studying the surfaces of biofibers are atomic force microscopy imaging and scanning electron microscopy, which well characterize surface geometry of the fibers but pr...

Bacterial glycan structures on cell surfaces are critical for cell-cell recognition and adhesion and in host-pathogen interactions. Accordingly, unraveling the sugar composition of bacterial cell surfaces can shed light on bacterial growth and pathogenesis. Here, we found that two rare sugars with a 3-C-methyl-6-deoxyhexose structure were linked to spore glycans in Bacillus cereus ATCC 14579 an...

Biodesulfurization (BDS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT) was carried out by Rhodococcus erythropolis IGST8 decorated with magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, synthesized in-house by a chemical method, with an average size of 45-50 nm, in order to facilitate the post-reaction separation of the bacteria from the reaction mixture. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the magnetic nanoparticles subst...

Abstract With the development of industrialization, emission volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to atmosphere causes serious environmental problems and treatment VOCs needs consume a lot energy. Moreover, indoor are seriously harmful human health. Thus, there is an urgent requirement for technologies. Catalytic degradation VOCs, as low energy consumption, high efficiency, easy achieve manner, ha...

A low density, high strength medium-Mn steel was processed to produce a bimodal duplex microstructure consisting of coarse grained γ-austenite with fine δ-ferrite grains decorating the boundaries. Using combination ex situ analysis and in neutron diffraction, deformation mechanisms lattice strains within each phase were identified for specimens undergoing uniaxial tension during room elevated t...

Proteins of the dynamin superfamily mediate membrane fission, fusion, and restructuring events by polymerizing upon lipid bilayers and forcing regions of high curvature. In this work, we show the electron cryomicroscopy reconstruction of a bacterial dynamin-like protein (BDLP) helical filament decorating a lipid tube at approximately 11 A resolution. We fitted the BDLP crystal structure and pro...

A novel tubular NiO nanostructure was synthesized by a facile and low-cost hydrothermal strategy and then further functionalized by decorating α-Fe2O3 nanorods. The images of electron microscopy indicated that the α-Fe2O3 nanorods were assembled epitaxially on the surfaces of NiO nanotubes to form α-Fe2O3/NiO nanotubes. As a proof-of-concept demonstration of the function, gas sensing devices we...

A supramolecular carbohydrate-functionalized two-dimensional (2D) surface was designed and synthesized by decorating thermally reduced graphene sheets with multivalent sugar ligands. The formation of host-guest inclusions on the carbon surface provides a versatile strategy, not only to increase the intrinsic water solubility of graphene-based materials, but more importantly to let the desired b...

Psu, a 20-kD bacteriophage P4 capsid decorating protein moonlights as a transcription antiterminator of the Rho-dependent termination. Psu forms specific complex with E.coli Rho protein, and affects the latter's ATP-dependent translocase activity along the nascent RNA. It forms a unique knotted dimer to take a V-shaped structure. The C-terminal helix of Psu makes specific contacts with a disord...
