The importance of a broad suite of complex structured habitats as nurseries for estuarine fauna is well recognized. In contrast, recent evidence indicates the nursery value of salt marshes and contiguous unvegetated mud flats for blue crabs are underestimated. To assess the nursery value of salt marsh tidal creeks for the blue crab Callinectes sapidus in coastal North Carolina, USA, we quantifi...

The influence of mangrove saplings (Avicennia marina) and fiddler crabs (Uca vocans) on carbon, iron, and sulfur biogeochemistry in mangrove sediment was studied using outdoor mesocosms with and without plants (21 m22) and crabs (68 m22). Saplings grew more leaves and pneumatophores in the presence of crabs. Dense microalgal mats lead to two to six times higher benthic production and about two ...

The taxonomy of three species of freshwater crabs from the Upper Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Potamonautes congoensis (Rathbun, 1921), P. langi (Rathbun, 1921), and P. stanleyensis (Rathbun, 1921), is revised based on examination of the holotypes. Updated diagnoses, illustrations, and distribution maps are provided for these species, and their conservation status is discussed.

This study examined the role of broadly distributed sensor populations in chemosensory searching, especially cross-stream heading adjustment. We used three-dimensional laser-induced fluorescence to collect chemical concentration data simultaneously with behavior observations of actively tracking blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus). Our analysis indicates that the spatial distribution of the odoran...

—Foza raimundi, a new genus and species of freshwater crab from Antsiranana Province, northernMadagascar, isdescribedfromahigh-altitude locality in the isolated Marojejy mountain range. The unusual combination of characters of the new species warrants the establishment of a new genus to accommodate this taxon. The new taxon is compared to the other species of freshwater crabs occurring in Madaga...

Gills are the primary organ for salt transport, but in land crabs they are removed from water and thus ion exchanges, as well as CO(2) and ammonia excretion, are compromised. Urinary salt loss is minimised in land crabs by redirecting the urine across the gills where salt reabsorption occurs. Euryhaline marine crabs utilise apical membrane branchial Na(+)/H(+) and Cl(-)/HCO(3)(-) exchange power...

Crabs, such as swimming crabs and mud crabs, are famous for their high nutritional value but difficult to preserve. Thus, the traceability of is vital food safety. Existing deep-learning methods can be applied identify individual crabs. However, there no previous study that used abdomen images In this paper, we provide a novel Part-based Deep Learning Network (PDN) reliably an crab from its cap...

Surveying free-ranging crab populations is important for monitoring the health of exploited stocks and predicting future productivity. Here, we present a novel research trap design use in fisheries-independent surveys blue swimmer (Portunus armatus) populations, evaluate against some existing approaches within an independent survey framework. Specifically, aimed to improve efficiency capturing ...
