Due to accident severity and the extent of claim payments commuting accidents are a significant expense factor in the German industry. Therefore the aim of the present study was the identification of risk factors for commuting accidents in a German chemical company. A retrospective analysis of commuting accidents recorded between 1990 and 2003 was conducted in a major chemical company in German...
Past research suggests that mixed land-uses encourage non-auto commuting; however, the evidence remains sketchy. This paper explores this question by investigating how the presence of retail activities in neighborhoods influences the commuting choices of residents using data from the 1985 American Housing Survey. Having grocery stores and other consumer services within 300 feet of one’s residen...
This paper addresses various questions about pairs of similarity classes of matrices which contain commuting elements. In the case of matrices over finite fields, we show that the problem of determining such pairs reduces to a question about nilpotent classes; this reduction makes use of class types in the sense of Steinberg and Green. We investigate the set of scalars that arise as determinant...
BACKGROUND: Children's active commuting to school, i.e. walking or cycling to school, was associated with greater moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, although studies among ethnic minorities are sparse. OBJECTIVES: Among a low-income, ethnic minority sample of fourth grade students from eight public schools, we examined (1) correlates of active commuting to school and (2) the relationship b...
In the context of finite elements, construction of higher order shape functions for elements forming the exact sequence has been a long standing activity in both engineering and numerical analysis communities. A comprehensive review of the subject can be found for example in Demkowicz (2006), Demkowicz et al. (2007) and references therein. This document presents a self-contained systematic theo...
In this lecture we introduce Schmüdgen’s theorem about the Kmoment problem (or equivalently, on the representation of positive polynomials) and describe the basic elements in his proof. This approach combines both algebraic tools (using the Positivstellensatz to prove the boundedness of certain operators) and functional analysis (spectral measures of commuting families of operators and the Hah...
We define " star reducible " Coxeter groups to be those Coxeter groups for which every fully commutative element (in the sense of Stembridge) is equivalent to a product of commuting generators by a sequence of length-decreasing star operations (in the sense of Lusztig). We show that the Kazhdan–Lusztig bases of these groups have a nice projection property to the Temperley–Lieb type quotient, an...
This paper studies commuting matrices in max algebra and nonnegative linear algebra. Our starting point is the existence of a common eigenvector, which directly leads to max analogues of some classical results for complex matrices. We also investigate Frobenius normal forms of commuting matrices, particularly when the Perron roots of the components are distinct. For the case of max algebra, we ...
Cross-sectional study that aimed to estimate the prevalence of forms of commuting to and from work and to identify factors associated among industrial workers in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. A total of 2,265 workers completed a questionnaire on the forms of commuting to and from work (walking/biking, bus or car/motorcycle). Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimat...
In this paper, we compute the Laplacian spectrum of non-commuting graphs of some classes of finite non-abelian groups. Our computations reveal that the non-commuting graphs of all the groups considered in this paper are L-integral. We also obtain some conditions on a group G so that its non-commuting graph is L-integral.
