The Peruvian Amazon is in an advantageous situation for fish culture. Survey data from 146 practicing fish farmers show that they culture a variety of species, but regardless of the kind of fish they grow, farmers view fish culture in a positive light. While gamitana (Colossoma macropomum) is not the only Amazon fish to deserve special attention, it is the first species about which enough is kn...

fish may experience periods of food deprivation or starvation in nature (such as seasonal migration and reproduction) and under culture conditions (unpredictable stress such as transporting and sorting). with respect to vital role of starvation periods on body composition, the current study was carried out in autumn 2010 at international sturgeon research institute. after adaptation for one mon...

In recent years, in Korea, recirculating aquaculture technologies for intensive fish culture are increasingly being used to enhance production of a high quality aquacultural products all year around including seawater. In high density aquaculture system, the increase of protein and organic particulates by uneaten feed, feed waste and excreta of fish gives a bad effect in fish growth and environ...

In this study, we examined the microbial population in different parts, gill, muscles and intestine region of Channa punctatus from two different fish culture farm. Based on their growth characteristics on specific culture media, the following human bacterial pathogen such as Achromobacter xylosoxidans (Gram +ve), Acinetobacter anitratus (Gram -ve), Bacillus subtilis (Gram +ve), Proteus vulgari...

Water quality, microbial contamination, prior fish health, and variable results have been major impediments to identifying the cause and mechanism of fish mortality in standard aquarium-format Pfiesteria bioassays. Therefore, we developed a sensitive 96-h larval fish bioassay for assessing Pfiesteria spp. pathogenicity using six-well tissue culture plates and 7-dayold larval cyprinodontid fish....

The aim of the study was to estimate the effect of culture conditions and culture site on magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn) concentrations in freshwater fish. The study encompassed dorsal muscles in five fish species: common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) and Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baeri Brandt), northern pike (Esox lucius L.) and grass carp (Ctenopharyn...

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using peptide nucleic acid probes (PNAs) allows the identification of Staphylococcus aureus from human blood culture samples. We present data revealing that the combination of PNA FISH and flow cytometry is a possible approach for the noncultural identification of staphylococci in blood cultures.

Respiring Pseudomonas spp. in milk were quantified within 6 h by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with vital staining. FISH with an oligonucleotide probe based on 16S rRNA sequences was used for the specific detection of Pseudomonas spp. at the single cell level. 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride (CTC) was used to estimate bacterial respiratory activity. The numbers of respiring...

Aquaculture has been an important economic sector in Vietnam due to its rapid growth and considerable contribution to national fisheries production. With data collected from a field survey interviewing 120 fish farmers in southern Vietnam, this study uses a cumulative logistic model to extend the satisfaction approach to an analysis of the farmers’ satisfaction with their fish farming. Regressi...

From the inception of the supervised industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) in Nigerian institutions of higher learning quite many students have done it at African Regional Aquaculture Centre (ARAC). In the year 2010 alone 340 students were in ARAC for of these students lacked functional understanding of the underlying principles and practices of water quality management at the planning and ...
