conclusions high-level antibiotic resistance can occur as a result of multidrug efflux pumps combined with other mechanisms of resistance. however, the association between over-expression of these genes and highly resistant clinical isolates cannot be ignored. results our results confirmed 203 and 60 p. aeruginosa isolates from burn and non-burn specimens, respectively. the most antibiotic resi...

Humans are the only natural reservoir for meningococci. The appropriate specimens that should be taken for isolation of meningococci are dependent on the clinical question. The most appropriate specimen and/or laboratory techniques for microbiological diagnosis in an acutely sick patient with suspected invasive disease like meningitis/septicemia (1) may be quite different from those required fo...

Coccidioides DNA was amplified from serum by a PCR using coccidioid-specific primers. A 239-bp product was visualized when 10 fg of exogenous coccidioidal DNA was subjected to amplification. This product was demonstrated in some human and mouse sera prior to the detection of coccidioidal antibodies.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) across patient populations of all ages. We have developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay that enables rapid, low-cost detection of M. pneumoniae from nucleic acid extracts and directly from various respiratory specimen types. The assay implements calcein to facilitate simple visual readout of p...

From March 1979 to June 1980, we preliminary identified mycobacteria at the time of their initial isolation by colonial morphology, pigmentation, and growth rate. The definitive identifications were predicted accurately for 92% of the mycobacteria isolated from 108 patients. For laboratories that isolate relatively few different species of mycobacteria, the advantages of this approach are its s...

Conventional tests and commercially available systems were used to determine the species identities of clinical isolates of enterococci. Strict adherence to the conventional test scheme of Facklam and Collins (R. R. Facklam and M. D. Collins, J. Clin. Microbiol. 27:731-734, 1989) resulted in the misidentification of lactose-negative Enterococcus faecalis isolates as Enterococcus solitarius, but...
