We demonstrate that human interleukin 3 (IL-3) is a lectin recognizing specifically the glycosaminoglycan part of a chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan (PGS3; Normand, G., Kuchler, S., Meyer, A., Vincendon, G., and Zanetta, J. P. (1988) J. Neurochem. 51, 665-676) isolated from the adult rat brain. The specificity of the interaction of this particular proteoglycan with IL-3 is due to the abundance ...

Background: Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are integral components of articular cartilage and they have important role to the physiologic and mechanical properties of this tissue. Glucosamine is acting as the precursor of the disaccharide unit in glucosaminoglycans (GAGs) of Cartilage Materials and method: The use of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for the symptomatic treatment of os...

The excretion of mucopolysaccharides normally found in urine (chondroitin, chondroitin sulfates A and C, keratosulfate, and heparitin sulfate) is increased approximately twofold in patients with progresive exophthalmos. A threefold elevation of total serum mucopolysaccharides is also found. These increases are unrelated to thyroid function.

The lumen of the Golgi apparatus is the subcellular site where galactose is transferred, from UDP-galactose, to the oligosaccharide chains of glycoproteins, glycolipids, and proteoglycans. The nucleotide sugar, which is synthesized in the cytosol, must first be transported into the Golgi lumen by a specific UDP-galactose transporter. Previously, a mutant polarized epithelial cell (MDCKII-RCAr) ...

BACKGROUND Raw data from 3 similar clinical trials were analyzed in this individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis to define any possible efficacy of intravesical 2% chondroitin sulphate in IC/BPS. METHODS We pooled IPD from an open label and 2 small randomized placebo controlled trials assessing chondroitin sulphate in IC/BPS (similar inclusion/exclusion criteria, treatment, outcome as...

The 1C6 monoclonal antibody to the hyaluronic acid-binding region weakly stained a 65-kD component in immunoblots of the chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans of brain, and the 8A4 monoclonal antibody, which recognizes two epitopes in the polypeptide portion of link protein, produced strong staining of a 45-kD component present in the brain proteoglycans. These antibodies were utilized to examine t...

Pleiotrophin/heparin-binding growth-associated molecule (HB-GAM) is a specific ligand of protein tyrosine phosphatase zeta (PTPzeta)/receptor-like protein tyrosine phosphatase beta (RPTPbeta) expressed in the brain as a chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan. Pleiotrophin and PTPzeta isoforms are localized along the radial glial fibers, a scaffold for neuronal migration, suggesting that these molecul...
