We investigated the effects of nilvadipine, a calcium antagonist, on cerebral ischemia in rats. Under halothane anesthesia, 30 rats had a 3-0 nylon suture introduced through the extracranial internal carotid artery to occlude the left middle cerebral artery. Nilvadipine was dissolved in polyethylene glycol 400. Immediately following occlusion, group 1 rats (n = 10) were treated subcutaneously w...

Ischaemic cerebrovascular disease is a relatively common but under-recognised complication of neurocysticercosis. It is usually caused by inflammatory occlusion of the arteries at the base of the brain secondary to cysticercotic arachnoiditis. In most cases, the involved vessels are of small diameter and the neurological picture is limited to a lacunar syndrome secondary to a small cerebral inf...

Objective(s): Stroke is known as a main cause of mortality and prolonged disability in adults. Both transient receptor potential V1 (TRPV1) channels and toll-like receptors (TLRs) are involved in mediating the inflammatory responses. In the present study, the effects of TRPV1 receptor activation and blockade on stroke outcome and gene expression of TLR2 and TLR4 were assessed following permanen...

The present study was designed to investigate the putative effect of neurosteroid modulation on global ischaemia-reperfusion-induced cerebral injury in mice. Bilateral carotid artery occlusion followed by reperfusion, produced a significant rise in cerebral infarct size along with impairment of grip strength and motor coordination in Swiss albino mice. Administration of carbamazepine (16 mg/kg,...

The relation between cerebral lesions studied by computed tomography and the dementia syndrome has been evaluated in 40 patients with multi-infarct dementia, in 44 nondemented subjects with multiple infarcts, and in 30 controls matched for age and sex. Our study of the volume of ischemic lesions showed a slightly greater loss of cerebral substance in patients with multi-infarct dementia than in...

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of VEGF treatment on focal cerebral ischemia in rats. Rats were administered PBS or VEGF at concentrations of 10, 20 or 30 µg/ml. The effects of VEGF on the rat infarct volume and neurological deficits were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy was used to observe the ultrastructure of th...

Tinofedrine, a new derivative of l-norephedrine, was examined for cerebral vasodilator activity in man. Ten patients with reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF) and multi-infarct dementia were given the drug intravenously. Cerebral blood flow increased significantly by 28% from a mean of 43.3 to 55.5 ml/100 g/min.

Patients who received endovascular therapy (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (AIS-LVO) and large-scaled core infarct volume in the time window were analyzed. Literature data reviewed. Results showed that although EVT is first choice to AIS-LVO, patients often have poor prognosis. Alberta program early CT score (ASPECTS) based on computerized tomography angiography sour...
