Cruveilhier-Baumgarten syndrome (CBS) is a rare complication of cirrhosis. We reported a case of CBS who came to hospital with progressive ascites, jaundice, fever and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The cause of cirrhosis and hepatitis might be due to alcohol and possibly local Thai herb [Boesenbergia pundurata (Roxb.) Schitr or Krachaidum].

Patients with hepatic cirrhosis may bleed into the gut not only from oesophageal varices, but also from a chronic peptic ulcer or erosive gastritis (Palmer and Brick, 1953). It may thus be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of gastrointestinal haemorrhage in patients with hepatic cirrhosis, especially as it is generally agreed that there is a high incidence of peptic ulcer in such patients. ...
This study reports the incidence of HBsAg in a series of chronic lymphoproliferative disorders in which a high incidence of cirrhoses had been previously observed. Twenty-three cases were collected from the necropsy records. The type of lymphoma was reviewed in the light of the new functional classifications of non-Hodgkin malignant lymphomas introduced by Lennert and Lukes. The presence of HBs...
We have recently shown that major alterations of serum sphingolipid metabolites in chronic liver disease associate significantly with the stage of liver fibrosis in corresponding patients. In the current study we assessed via mass spectrometry serum concentrations of sphingolipid metabolites in a series of 122 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) compared to an age- and sex-matched seri...
BACKGROUND Insulin resistance (IR) is associated with hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis, regardless of its etiology but the mechanism of hyperinsulinemia in cirrhosis is still unclear. The current study was designed to assess hyperinsulinemia and pancreatic β-cell function in euglycemic cirrhosis of varied etiology. METHODS A cross sectional case control study of 100 subjects. IR was assessed by...
BACKGROUND AND AIMS An impaired lipid metabolism is often observed in patients with chronic liver diseases. To determine lipid profile in patients with cirrhosis and to asses if it relates to the severity of the cirrhosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS In an analytical cross-sectional study, 50 patients with cirrhosis (case) and 50 age- and sex matched healthy normolipidemic patients (comparison) wer...
Spontaneous splenic infarction has been rarely reported as a complication of cirrhosis and portal hypertension. We describe the case of a 67-year-old female with past medical history of primary biliary cirrhosis presenting for a 1-day history of left upper quadrant pain. Investigations were in favor of splenic infarcts secondary to portal hypertension. The patient improved with conservative man...
With the advent of the antibiotic era and the improvement in serological diagnostic techniques, there has obviously been a need to reappraise the clinical aspects of syphilis. Karmi, Thirkettle, and Read (1969) reported the results of such a study on the relationship between patients with cirrhosis and syphilitic infection. For many years the consensus of opinion was that a relatively high prop...
Two immunofluorescence procedures to evaluate antinuclear antibodies were compared in a series of 221 patients with chronic liver disorders of various aetiologies. The use of HEp-2 cells allowed us to discriminate with more confidence between the homogeneous and speckled patterns, to show the presence of associated patterns in the same serum, and, above all, to identify two specificities, unrec...
