Acetazolamide is widely used to treat glaucoma because it reduces the rate of formation of aqueous humour.1 It should be remembered, however, that acetazolamide inhibits carbonic anhydrase in the renal proximal tubular epithelium, which results in a bicarbonate diuresis. Indeed, acetazolamide was first introduced to treat glaucoma because of this diuretic action.2 We report on two patients in w...

The denaturation and renaturation of bovine carbonic anhydrase B is a thermodynamically reversible process, uncomplicated by aggregation or disuhide bond formation. The reaction is less cooperative than is the unfolding and refolding of most globular proteins, in that distinct successive stages can be observed both in equilibrium and kinetic measurements. This enzyme is therefore ideally suited...

A shortage in the zinc supply to spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) drastically reduced carbonic anhydrase levels with little effect on net CO(2) uptake per unit leaf area, except with the most severe zinc stresses. Under these conditions, carbonic anhydrase was below 10% and photosynthesis 60 to 70% of the control levels. When photosynthesis was measured at a range of CO(2) supply levels, zinc-def...

The anticancer agent indisulam has a nonlinear pharmacokinetic profile, which may be partly related to saturable binding to blood constituents. To gain insight into the complex nonlinear behavior of indisulam, we investigated binding to plasma proteins and erythrocytes. The purpose of the study was to develop a physiological model for the distribution of indisulam in blood. Concentrations of ra...

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity and localization have been examined in two species of the eukaryotic green alga Chlorella. Mass spectrometric and potentiometric assays of CA activity indicate that C. ellipsoidea contains very little extracellular CA activity whereas C. saccharophila exhibits significant extracellular activity when grown at alkaline pH values. Extracellular CA activity appears ...

Absract The collective of Professor Puscas sugests a theory The pH theory, which presents as a common element of these three receptors (for histamine, acetylcholine and gastrine)the carbonic anhydrase. According to this theory histamine, gastrine and acetylcholine have a dual effect on the parietal cell: one known, that their specific receptor binding, and the second effect, that the activation...

A series of benzimidazo[1,2-c][1,2,3]thiadiazole-7-sulfonamides were synthesized and their binding to two carbonic anhydrase isozymes measured by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Human carbonic anhydrase I (hCAI) and bovine carbonic anhydrase II (bCAII) bound the inhibitors with observed association constants in the range from 1.1 x 10(6) to 2.6 x 10(7) M(-1).

THE TITLE COMPOUND WAS PREPARED BY AN IMPROVED VARIANT OF THE LITERATURE PROCEDURE, AND METAL COMPLEXES CONTAINING ITS ANION AND THE FOLLOWING METAL IONS: Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), V(IV), Fe(III) and Ag(I) were synthesized and characterized by standard procedures (elemental analysis; IR, electronic, NMR and EPR spectroscopy; TG, magnetic and conductimetric measurements). T...

The active species of "CO(2)" and the amount of fractionation of stable carbon isotopes have been determined for a partially purified preparation of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.31) from corn (Zea mays) leaves. The rates of the enzyme reactions, using substrate amounts of HCO(3) (-), CO(2) or CO(2) plus carbonic anhydrase, show that HCO(3) (-) is the active species of "CO(2)"...
