Highly luminescent, water-soluble and biocompatible Carbon Quantum Dots (aqCQDs) were prepared by encapsulating the parent hydrophobic CQDs in an amphiphilic polymer. The resulting aqCQDs were non-toxic to living cells, and were found to cross the cell membrane and localise primarily in the cytosol.

An efficient strategy for selective fluorescent detection of Cu(2+) was developed based on the carbon quantum dots (CQDs) nanoconjugated with a specific organic molecule, amino TPEA, and further applied to intracellular sensing and imaging of Cu(2+) as a consequence of the fluorescence properties and the established low cytotoxicity of CQDs.

NIR light induced H2 evolution was realized by metal-free photocatalysis for the first time. The considerable H2 production at 808 nm and large promotion of the photocatalytic activity in both UV-Vis and Vis regions originated from the synergistic effect on spectral and electronic coupling of g-C3N4 nanosheets and carbon quantum dots.

A versatile photoelectrochemical biosensing platform was developed based on DNA-CdS quantum dots (QDs) sensitized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)-COOH. Combining with cyclic enzymatic amplification, a convenient, sensitive and specific biosensor for the direct detection of microRNAs (miRNAs) was designed, which provided a novel approach for analysis of miRNAs.

We provide a microscopic theory for semiconductor quantum dots that explains the pronounced deviations from the prevalent point-dipole description that were recently observed in spectroscopic experiments on quantum dots in photonic nanostructures. The deviations originate from structural inhomogeneities generating a large circular quantum current density that flows inside the quantum dot over m...
