There has been considerable discussion of the claim by Stapp [1] that quantum theory is incompatible with locality. In this note I analyze the meaning of some of the statements used in this discussion.

We prove that quantum nonlocality is intrinsically noncausal by means of a thought-experiment in which usable superluminal signals are nonlocally transmitted. This contrasts with the general belief that the randomness in correlated measurements always ensures that nonlocality is effectively causal. The key ideas of the experiment are: (1) to polarize the correlated particle pairs leaving the so...

The independence of the Aharonov-Bohm phase shift on particle velocity is one of its defining properties. The classical counterpart to this dispersionless behavior is the absence of forces along the direction of motion of the particle. A reevaluation of the experimental demonstration that forces are absent in the AB physical system is given, including previously unpublished data. It is shown th...

We discuss the Maxwell electromagnetic duality relations between the Aharonov-Bohm, Aharonov-Casher, and He-McKellar-Wilkens topological phases, which allows a unified description of all three phenomena. We also elucidate Lorentz transformations that allow these effects to be understood in an intuitive fashion in the rest frame of the moving quantum particle. Finally, we propose a realistic set...

We study a weakly local, but nonlocal model in spacetime dimension d ≥ 2 which satisfies the remaining Wightman axioms. We prove that this model is (quantitatively) maximally nonlocal; nevertheless, it has string–localized observables of the sort which enable two–body scattering theory to be defined. In two spacetime dimensions, it even has a covariant and local subnet of observables localized ...

Let me first refer to the historical background of my talk. I got the degree of doctor (thesis: “Composite Model of Hadrons”) under Professor S. Sakata at Nagoya University in 1956, and moved to Kyoto University at the end of 1957 after passing nearly two years at Rikkyo University, where I could come into contact with Professor M. Taketani. Professor Yukawa(1907-81) in Kyoto was just 50 aged a...

Studies have shown that the attentional blink (AB) effect is diminished for intrinsically salient T2 stimuli, such as arousing, familiar, personally relevant words, or stimuli with salient lowlevel visual features. We examined whether the AB is diminished also for stimuli that do not have special inherent properties but are made salient by the context. One such contextual factor is the coherenc...

The Cauchy problem of the bipolar Navier-Stokes-Poisson system (1.1) in dimension three is considered. We obtain the pointwise estimates of the time-asymptotic shape of the solution, which exhibit generalized Huygens’ principle as the Navier-Stokes system. This phenomenon is the the most important difference from the unipolar Navier-Stokes-Poisson system. Due to non-conservative structure of th...

We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically random-phase surface solitons in effectively instantaneous nonlinear media. The key mechanism for self-trapping is played by a nonlocal nature of the nonlinearity, in contrast to other incoherent solitons involving time averaging. These incoherent surface solitons display features different from their bulk counterparts and from other surface waves.
