In this paper, we address the problem of k-out-of-` exclusion, a generalization of the mutual exclusion problem, in which there are ` units of a shared resource, and any process can request up to k units (1 ≤ k ≤ `). A protocol is self-stabilizing if, starting from an arbitrary configuration, be it initial state or after a corrupted state, the protocol can start behaving normally within a finit...
We present an anonymous self-stabilizing algorithm for finding a 1-maximal matching in trees, and rings of length not divisible by 3. We show that the algorithm converges in O(n) moves under an arbitrary central daemon.
The paper investigates the stabilizing potential of fiscal policy in a monetary union. The discussion about fiscal stabilization policy has been revived in the context of EMU. We consider a taxation-based stabilization policy, where the fiscal authority intends to minimize the output gap. As policy instrument, we consider a time-varying component in taxes on consumption. The model combines a mo...
We consider a braneworld scenario with a black brane parallel to our brane, aiming towards a Higgs phase of gravity in string theory. The existence of the black brane spontaneously breaks the Lorentz symmetry on our brane but preserves the rotational and translational invariance. If all moduli are stabilized then this should lead to a Higgs phase of gravity. We investigate moduli stabilization ...
We present a new self-stabilizing algorithm for finding a maximal strong matching in an arbitrary distributed network. The algorithm is capable of working with multiple types of demons (schedulers) as is the most recent algorithm in [1, 2]. The concepts behind the algorithm, using Ids in the newtork, promise to have applications for other graph theoretic primitives.
We describe a new type of synthetic amphiphile that is intended to support biochemical characterization of intrinsic membrane proteins. Members of this new family displayed favorable behavior with four of five membrane proteins tested, and these amphiphiles formed relatively small micelles.
Epothilones (Epo’s) are bacterial natural products which are potent inhibitors of human cancer cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo. Tumor growth inhibition is based on the stabilization of cellular microtubules and at least seven epothilone-derived agents are presently undergoing clinical evaluation in humans. While all of these compounds are closely related structurally to the natural prod...
4 Humans are increasingly altering the Earth’s surface, and affecting processes that shape and 5 reshape landscapes. In many cases, humans are reacting to landscape-change processes that 6 represent natural hazards. Thus, the landscape is reacting to humans who are reacting to the 7 landscape. When the timescales for landscape change are comparable to those of human 8 dynamics, human and ‘natur...
Sludge drying reed bed (SDRB) is a technology adopted to treat sludge from septic tanks, latrines, or anaerobic and aerobic reactors. The sludge is loaded by pumping on vegetated beds, and treated by a combination of physical and biochemical processes. The dewatering of the sludge is due to a combined effect of drainage and evapotranspiration. The organic matter reduction of the sludge is drive...
phenol is a common pollutant that was listed by us environmental protection agency (epa) among the priority pollutants. classical methods employed for phenol removal are either costly or limited to large-scale applications such as biological and thermal decomposition methods. in this study, adsorption of phenol by a type of clay that is extracted from a local soil called khoweldi was investigat...
