Human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences reveal an abundance of polymorphic sites in which the frequencies of the segregating bases are very different. A typical polymorphism involves one base at low frequency and the other base at high frequency. In contrast, nuclear gene data sets tend to show an excess of polymorphisms in which both segregating bases are at intermediate frequencies. A new s...

Membrane vesicles containing partially inactivated acetylcholine receptor (AcChoR) channels may produce a full 22Na+ flux response because an excess of channels may exist above the level needed to completely empty the vesicles of ions. Therefore, attempts to use ion flux amplitudes as indicators of AcChoR function may fail due to the presence of these excess AcChoR channels. Random inactivation...
Genes that have experienced accelerated evolutionary rates on the human lineage during recent evolution are candidates for involvement in human-specific adaptations. To determine the forces that cause increased evolutionary rates in certain genes, we analyzed alignments of 10,238 human genes to their orthologues in chimpanzee and macaque. Using a likelihood ratio test, we identified protein-cod...
We show that under mild assumptions on the learning problem, one can obtain a fast error rate for every reasonable fixed target function even if the base class is not convex. To that end, we show that in such cases the excess loss class satisfies a Bernstein type condition.
Excess mortality in persons with severe mental disorders (SMD) is a major public health challenge that warrants action. The number and scope of truly tested interventions in this area remain limited, and strategies for implementation and scaling up of programmes with a strong evidence base are scarce. Furthermore, the majority of available interventions focus on a single or an otherwise limited...
The occurrence of DNA tracts of the three binary base combinations: R.Y, K.M and W;S has been mapped in the complete genomes of Haemophilus influenzae and Escherichia coli. A highly significant over-representation of W tracts is observed in both bacteria. The excess of W tracts is particularly striking in the 10% intercoding regions. Subdivision of intercoding regions into divergent (promoting)...
Deprotection of an N(α)-Fmoc-protected glycocysteine derivative 7 with an excess of morpholine unexpectedly led to the fluorenylmethyl-protected thioether 8 in high yield. The suggested mechanism for this reaction comprises the addition of the cysteine thiolate on the exocyclic double bond of dibenzofulvene, which is formed during Fmoc deprotection. The influence of base concentration on this t...
A simple and straightforward method for the preparation of indole-3-carboxylic acids was discovered through the direct carboxylation of indoles with atmospheric pressure of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) under basic conditions. The key for the reaction was found to be the use of a large excess of LiO(t)Bu as a base to suppress the undesired decarboxylation side reaction.
