Adult-onset Still's disease is a rare systemic inflammatory illness. The condition is difficult to diagnose because the illness can resemble sepsis and other well known conditions. This case report concerns a 67 year-old woman with adult-onset Still's disease in two rare manifestations: acute respiratory distress syndrome and neurological manifestation in the form of Gullain Barré syndrome.
A case of polyneuropathy (Guillain--Barré syndrome) developing only 6 days after rubella infection in a 26-year-old woman is described. Serological confirmation of the viral infection by detecting the specific IgM antibody has not been previously reported in any of the rubella cases associated with the syndrome.
[Purpose] The study aimed to investigate the effects of daily living occupational therapy and resistance exercise on the performance of activities of daily living and muscular fitness in a patient with Guillain-Barré syndrome. [Subject and Methods] A 35-year-old man was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome. He was hospitalized at A Hospital for 3 years, and was discharged from the hospital af...
This case report describes a patient with Guillain-Barré syndrome in whom the presence of coma and absent brain stem reflexes suggested the possibility of brainstem death. A differential diagnosis of fixed dilated pupils is presented.
A patient with Plasmodium falciparum malaria developed peripheral neuropathy. Clinical, cerebro-spinal fluid examination and nerve conduction studies confirmed Guillain-Barré syndrome, not previously reported in P. falciparum malaria.
We studied 263 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome from 1996 to 2001, 40% of which were associated with a known causative agent, mainly Campylobacter jejuni (22%) or cytomegalovirus (15%). The cases with no known agent (60%) peaked in winter, and half were preceded by respiratory infection, influenza-like syndrome, or gastrointestinal illness.
Guillain-Barré syndrome is the most common polyneuropathy causing major disability and respiratory failure. Respiratory complications are the main cause of death. Improved respiratory care and new treatment strategies such as plasmaphoresis and immunoglobulin have been shown to improve outcome. We studied the course and outcome of 37 patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome who were admitted to a ...
INTRODUCTION The association of Guillain-Barré syndrome with vaccination has been described in the literature; it is infrequent and controversial. An association with swine influenza, influenza, hepatitis and tetanus vaccination has been documented in few case reports. CASE PRESENTATION A 40-year-old Caucasian man sustained a small right temporal epidural hematoma and nondisplaced right skull...
Cervical vertigo is characterized by vertigo from the cervical spine. However, whether cervical vertigo is an independent entity still remains controversial. In this narrative review, we outline the basic science and clinical evidence for cervical vertigo according to the current literature. So far, there are 4 different hypotheses explaining the vertigo of a cervical origin, including proprioc...
To elucidate the features of patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome who show markedly rapid clinical recovery, clinical, serological, and electrophysiological data of 80 consecutive patients were reviewed. Antigangliosides, and Campylobacter jejuni and Haemophilus influenzae antibodies were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assays. Nine (11%) patients showed rapid recovery (improvement by ...
