This paper describes a specific, sensitive, semiautomated, and quantitative Hep-2 cell culture-based 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay for Bacillus cereus emetic toxin. Of nine Bacillus, Brevibacillus, and Paenibacillus species assessed for emetic toxin production, only B. cereus was cytotoxic.
Cereulide production has until now been restricted to the species Bacillus cereus. Here we report on two psychrotolerant Bacillus weihenstephanensis strains, MC67 and MC118, that produce cereulide. The strains are atypical with regard to pheno- and genotypic characteristics normally used for identification of emetic B. cereus strains. MC67 and MC118 produced cereulide at temperatures of as low ...
As 16S rRNA sequence analysis has proven inadequate for the differentiation of Bacillus cereus from closely related species, we employed the gyrase B gene (gyrB) as a molecular diagnostic marker. The gyrB genes of B. cereus JCM 2152(T), Bacillus thuringiensis IAM 12077(T), Bacillus mycoides ATCC 6462(T), and Bacillus anthracis Pasteur #2H were cloned and sequenced. Oligonucleotide PCR primer se...
objective: bacillus cereus (b. cereus) is a gram-positive, spore-forming bacteria widely distributed in the environment. this bacteria is an opportunistic human pathogen that can cause diarrheal and emetic types of food poisoning. the diarrhea type of food poisoning can be caused by hemolysin bl (hbl), non-hemolytic (nhe), and cytotoxin k enterotoxins. rice is commonly contaminated with b. cere...
AIMS To determine the contribution of potential modes of action of a Bacillus cereus aquaculture biological control agent in inhibition of the fish pathogen, Aeromonas hydrophila. METHODS AND RESULTS When B. cereus was tested in plate well inhibition studies, no production of antimicrobial compounds was detected. Bacillus cereus had a high growth rate (0.96 h(-1)), whereas Aer. hydrophila con...
A total of 119 Bacillus thuringiensis strains (83 type strains and 26 native isolates), as well as five B. cereus group species, were analyzed by repetitive extragenic palindromic sequence-based PCR analysis (Rep-PCR) fingerprinting. Primers Bc-REP-1 and Bc-REP-2 were specifically designed according to an extragenic 26-bp repeated sequence found in the six B. cereus group genomes reported. A to...
Bacillus cereus is a rare cause of endocarditis, typically associated with intravenous drug abuse, rheumatic heart disease, prosthetic heart valves, pacemakers, or immunodeficiency. We present the first case of native valve Bacillus cereus endocarditis with no apparent risk factors. The patient had a fulminant course requiring emergent valve replacement.
The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of a probiotic containing Bacillus cereus var. Toyoi spores (Toyocerin) and benzoic acid (VevoVitall) on growth performance and diarrhoea in weaning pigs, against negative controls. The trial groups were as follows: (a) NC group (Negative Controls): No treatment (b) TOYO group: Same feed as in the controls plus Toyocerin at a dose of 1 x 10(9...
A new antibiotic, cispentacin, was isolated from the culture broth of a Bacillus cereus strain, L450-B2. The antibiotic is water-soluble and amphoteric; its structure was determined by spectroscopic analysis and chemical synthesis to be (1R,2S)-2-aminocyclopentane-1-carboxylic acid. Cispentacin demonstrated only weak in vitro activity against certain fungi but strong protection of mice from let...
bacteria use a chemical language to communicate with each other which enables them to synchronize gene expression as a result of cell density. this special language which is called quorum sensing (qs) is based on producing and sensing the small signals and eventually leads them to perceive when a minimum population unit is reached. on the contrary, quorum sensing blockade (quorum quenching) has...
