We report a community-acquired bloodstream infection with Acinteobacter ursingii in an HIV-negative woman who injected drugs. The infection was successfully treated with meropenem. Species identification was performed by using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Improved identification of Acinetobacter spp. by using this method will help identify clinic...

In lantibiotic lacticin 481 biosynthesis, LctT cleaves the precursor peptide and exports mature lantibiotic. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry revealed that a truncated form of lacticin 481 is produced in the absence of LctT or after cleavage site inactivation. Production of truncated lacticin 481 is 4-fold less efficient, and its specific activity is ...

A metaproteomics approach comprising two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (mass spectrometry) was applied to the largely uncultured infant fecal microbiota for the first time. The fecal microbial metaproteome profiles changed over time, and one protein spot contained a peptide sequence that showed high similarity to those of bifidoba...

We rapidly identified extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producers prospectively among 245 gram-negative bacilli-positive cultured blood specimens using the Rapid ESBL Nordmann/Dortet/Poirel test and direct bacterial identification using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. This combination identified ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae within 30 min and...

Bioinformatic considerations are offered to illustrate strengths and limitations of the characterization of Bacillus spores based on proteomic interpretation of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization spectra. In particular, species-specific biomarkers are evaluated in the context of both experimental access and uniqueness in silico.

We assessed the accuracy of yeast bloodstream isolate identification performed over a 1-year period at 10 South Korean hospitals, using the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF)-based Vitek MS system. The overall phenotypic misidentification rate was 3.4% (18/533), with considerable variation between hospitals (0.0% to 19.0%), compared to 1.1% (6/533) for the Vi...

We report a case of Veillonella parvula causing a urinary tract infection. The organism was isolated from urine using cystine-lactose-electrolyte deficient media and identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry confirmed by 16s RNA. This case highlights important clinical and microbiological considerations for urinary tract infections.

Surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SALDI-TOF-MS) using GaP nanoparticles (NPs) prepared by a gas evaporation method was investigated on poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs). The mass spectra of PEG and survival yield measurements suggested that larger GaP NPs have a quite high soft ionization ability.

In a hospital-acquired infection with multidrug-resistant Elizabethkingia, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA gene analysis identified the pathogen as Elizabethkingia miricola. Whole-genome sequencing, genus-level core genome analysis, and in silico DNA-DNA hybridization of 35 Elizabethkingia strains indicated that the species taxonomy shou...
