I return to the question of what distinguishes AOP languages by considering how the interpreters of AOP languages differ from conventional interpreters. Key elements for static transformation are seen to be redefinition of the set and lookup operators in the interpretation of the language. This analysis also yields a definition of crosscutting in terms of interlacing of interpreter actions.

This grant supported Laurie Hendren (McGill, Canada) as a visiting fellow for joint research with the Principal Investigator, Oege de Moor (Oxford). Hendren was on sabbatical leave at Oxford for the period August 2003 to July 2004. As a large part of this project deals with aspectoriented programming (AOP), we provide a brief introduction to AOP for reviewers not familiar with this research area.

This paper provides an overview of the three different kinds of AOP refactorings: aspect-aware OO refactorings, refactorings for AOP constructs, and refactorings of crosscutting concerns. We discuss recent developments for each of them and highlight their commonalities with respect to associated challenges and ties to related research, such as program analysis and aspect mining.
