In this randomised controlled trial, we evaluated the role of elastic compression using ankle injury stockings (AIS) in the management of fractures of the ankle. A total of 90 patients with a mean age of 47 years (16 to 79) were treated within 72 hours of presentation with a fracture of the ankle, 31 of whom were treated operatively and 59 conservatively, were randomised to be treated either wi...
INTRODUCTION For any orthopaedic surgeon working with trauma; ankle fractures are one of the most common injuries treated. The treatment of ankle fractures can be conservative, using external fixation, but more commonly the fractures are treated with open reduction and internal fixation. Residual pain and discomfort are common in patients after surgical treatment of fractures of the ankle. Some...
We describe a technique of lengthening osteotomy of the fibula for the late treatment of symptomatic malaligned or malunited fractures of the ankle. Good results at two to three years were achieved in five of six cases despite delays of up to four years from the original injury. The method can prevent progressive instability and degenerative arthritis.
Introduction: Despite increasing number of literature and publication on talus lateral process fracture, early diagnosis with this fracture is still missed leading to awful long term complication especially the younger ones. Discussion: The complications following delayed diagnosis of these fractures can be disabling so high index of suspicion even with minor ankle injuries as in this case is r...
Ankle fractures are complex injuries with variable prognoses that depend upon many factors. The aim of the treatment is to restore the ankle joint biomechanical stability with maximum range of motion. Most ankle fractures are fibular fractures, which have a typical oblique fracture line in the distal fibula located in the area of the tibiofibular syndesmosis. The aim of this study was to simula...
INTRODUCTION Total subtalar dislocation without fracture of the ankle is a rare clinical entity; it is usually due to a traumatic high-energy mechanism. Standard treatment is successful closed reduction under general anesthesia followed by non-weight bearing and ankle immobilization with a below-knee cast for 6 weeks. CASE PRESENTATION We present the case of a 30-year-old Moroccan woman who w...
Abstract Aim Ankle fractures are common, and the majority result of low energy torsional trauma. The aim treatment is to restore maintain stability alignment joint, ideally with normal anatomy ankle mortise. According BOAST guidelines for fractures, Early fixation within 24-48 hours recommended in patients under 60 years when mortise unstable. This study aimed at assessing our practice managing...
UNLABELLED Boden et al. suggested syndesmosis fixation was not necessary in distal pronation external rotation (PER) ankle fractures if rigid bimalleolar fracture fixation is achieved and was not necessary with deltoid ligament injury if the fibular fracture is no higher than 4.5 cm of the tibiotalar joint. We asked whether height of the fibular fracture with or without medial stability predict...
OBJECTIVE To investigate the surgical methods in treating Weber type C ankle injury and estimate the necessity of syndesmosis operative exploration. METHODS Forty three patients of Weber type C ankle injury were treated with open reduction and internal fixation from October 2004 to December 2009. Twenty nine patients were treated with routine procedure by open reduction and internal fixation,...
