Given the importance of auditory feedback in vocal production, how can deaf individuals produce intelligible speech? A new study suggests that somatosensory feedback is the answer and, more generally, offers intriguing insights into the action-oriented nature of sensory representations in the brain.
Brief summaries of no more than 350 words describing the rationale, objectives, methods, results, and conclusions of small and/or ongoingresearch projects. Abstracts must be self-explanatory and intelligible without reference to publications elsewhere and should not contain tables orfigures. Reviews of articles published elsewhere will also be considered for this section.
This thesis is concerned with reconstructing an intelligible time-domain speech signal from speech recognition features, such as Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), in a distributed speech recognition(DSR) environment. The initial reconstruction methods in this thesis require, in addition to MFCC vectors, fundamental frequency and voicing information. In the later parts of the thesis t...
Abstract. We automatically generate Euler diagrams that are too large to be readable on screen configurations commonly found in Universities and offices. We discuss how principles from information visualisation can be employed to render large diagrams intelligible. Furthermore, concrete examples implementing these information visualisation principles are presented. This work is at an early stag...
We build a connuent, local, asynchronous reduction on-terms, using innnite objects (partial injections of Girard's algebra L*), which is simple (only one move), intelligible (semantic setting of the reduction), general (based on a large-scale decomposition of), and may be mechanized.
In this paper, we consider the topic of iterative, one dimensional, signal reconstruction (specifically speech signals) from the magnitude spectrum and the phase spectrum. While this topic has been extensively researched and documented, we wish to recast some well-established results for the benefit of new researchers and those who desire a short, yet comprehensive, review of the subject. The t...
P lato is commonly known in the history of philosophy as an initiator of a dualistic concept of body and soul that favors the soul at the expense of the body. By contrast, Nietzsche is known as the thinker who reversed the Platonic order between the “true” intelligible world and the “untrue” sensible world by reinscribing thinking in terms of intelligible ideas in a bodily activity. He is known...
Listening to degraded speech can be challenging and requires a continuous investment of cognitive resources, which is more challenging for those with hearing loss. However, while alpha power (8-12 Hz) and pupil dilation have been suggested as objective correlates of listening effort, it is not clear whether they assess the same cognitive processes involved, or other sensory and/or neurophysiolo...
Restoring natural speech in paralyzed and aphasic people could be achieved using a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) controlling a speech synthesizer in real-time. To reach this goal, a prerequisite is to develop a speech synthesizer producing intelligible speech in real-time with a reasonable number of control parameters. We present here an articulatory-based speech synthesizer that can be contro...
