Nasolabial cysts are uncommon nonodontogenic lesions that occur in the nasal alar region. These lesions usually present with asymptomatic swelling but can cause pain if infected. In this case report, we describe the inadequacy of conventional radiography in a nasolabial cyst case, as well as the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography (US) findings in a 54-year-old female patient.

The marriage of endonasal rhinoplasty with structural grafting has resulted in more consistent rhinoplasty results. The nasal base can be stabilized by tongue-in-groove techniques, a columellar strut, or extended columellar strut. The middle vault can be addressed with spreader grafts or butterfly grafts. Lower lateral cartilage weakness can be supported with alar batten grafts or repositioning...

BACKGROUND Posttraumatic and postoperative defects of columella and the tip of the nose are difficult to reconstruct. There are several operative methods described in the literature, and many of them are step-by-step procedures with long duration. The aim of this study was to present one-step procedure for reconstruction of the columella and the tip of the nose with island-shaped arterial foreh...

Figure 1. Classic appearance of rhino-phyma with a bulbous, cosmetic nasal deformity causing distortion of the aesthetic subunits of the lower nose. Alar thickening can eventually lead to obstruction of the external nasal valves. Figure 2. Transition of the affected thicker sebaceous skin of the lower nose and the relatively unaffected upper nasal skin.

Facial clefts are extremely rare congenital deformities and there are only a few technique reports for surgical reconstruction of clefts in the literature. In this article, we report a Tessier no. 3 incomplete cleft reconstruction with alar transposition and irregular Z-plasty in a 2-year old female patient.

The authors report a case of Fielding type II acute atlanto-axial rotatory fixation (AARF). The CT scan with coronal reconstruction showed an avulsion of the apical and right alar ligament. These findings are exceptionally reported in the literature, especially concerning the apical ligament which might be a stabiliser in flexion and extension of the occipitocervical joint.

Pelvic insufficiency fractures are fairly common in elderly patients and can be a source of major functional impairment, particularly when they involve the ilium. Early rehabilitation with adequate pain relief has been the traditional method of treatment. The recently developed S2 alar iliac technique involves placing pelvic fixation into the ilium through a pathway from the sacral ala. The bon...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Although minor and major tip support mechanisms have been described in detail, no quantitative models exist to provide support for the relative contributions of the structural properties of the major alar cartilage, the fibrous attachments to surrounding structures, and the rigid support structures in an objective manner. STUDY DESIGN The finite element method was used t...

Most studies in mammals and birds have demonstrated common patterns of hypothalamic development highlighted by the combination of developmental regulatory genes (genoarchitecture), supporting the notion of the hypothalamus as a component of the secondary prosencephalon, topologically rostral to the diencephalon. In our comparative analysis we have summarized the data on the expression patterns ...

The hypothalamus comprises alar, basal, and floor plate developmental compartments. Recent molecular data support a rostrocaudal subdivision into rostral (terminal) and caudal (peduncular) halves. In this context, the distribution of neuronal populations expressing somatostatin (Sst) mRNA was analyzed in the developing mouse hypothalamus, comparing with the expression pattern of the genes Ortho...
