Alum sludge refers to the by-product from the processing of drinking water in water treatment works. In this study, groups of batch experiments were designed to identify the characteristics of dewatered alum sludge for phosphorus adsorption. Air-dried alum sludge (moisture content 10.2%), which was collected from a water treatment works in Dublin, was subjected to artificial P-rich wastewater a...

Optimization of Enzymatic saccharification conditions for acid treated bmr sorghum biomass was studied with the inhouse enzyme produced from Aspergillus sp.. Optimization of enzyme loading, substrate concentration, temperature and time yielded a maximum of 416.00 ± 0.55 mg/g sugars with an improved hydrolysis efficiency of 55.97 ± 0.45%. Protein adsorption onto lignocellulosic substance was inv...

In this paper we used a previously reported model for examining the adsorption of nonelectrolytes in solution by solid adsorbents to study the adsorption of lithium(I) cations by acid and sodium amberlites, which is an ion-exchange process. Based on the results, both are equilibrium processes and obey a kinetic law with a unity partial order in the Li+ concentration. The kinetic results were us...

Adsorption of mercury(ll) and methylmercury by two tannin sorbents was investigated using radiotracers. High sorption capacities for mercury are registered for both sorbents at pH 7. For Eucaliptus Saligna Sm sorbent (ETS) the maximum sorption capacity was 1.2_+.0.2 mmol/g and for Lysiloma latisiliqua sorbent (LTS) was 8.5+0.2 mmol/g. Methylmercury adsorption maximum was recorded at pH 4 and in...

Highly porous nitrogen-doped activated carbons (NACs) were prepared by the chemical activation of chitosan using alkali carbonates. The NACs exhibited extremely high CO2 capacities of 1.6 mmol g(-1) (15 kPa) and 4.9 mmol g(-1) (100 kPa) at 25 °C. Nitrogen atoms doped into carbon frameworks clearly enhanced CO2 adsorption at low partial pressures.

Adsorption capacities of N2 and various organic vapors on select electricarc and HiPco produced SWNTs were experimentally measured at 77 K and 298 K, respectively. The results indicated that the amount of N2 adsorbed on a SWNT sample depended on the sample purity, methodology and on the sample age. Adsorption capacities of organic vapors (100 10000 ppmv) on SWNTs in humid conditions were much h...

Heavy metals are serious pollutants in aquatic environments. A study was undertaken to remove Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb and Zn individually (single metal system) and together (mixed metals system) from water by adsorption onto a sodium titanate nanofibrous material. Langmuir adsorption capacities (mg/g) at 10(-3)M NaNO3 ionic strength in the single metal system were 60, 83, 115 and 149 for Ni, Zn, Cu, and...

Developing next-generation solid sorbents to improve the economy of pre- and post-combustion carbon capture processes has been challenging for many researchers. Magnesium oxide (MgO) is a promising sorbent because of its moderate sorption-desorption temperature and low heat of sorption. However, its low sorption capacity and thermal instability need to be improved. Various metal-promoted MgO so...

In this paper, multiscale composites formed by grafting N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNs) on the surface of polyamide (PAN)-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were investigated and their adsorption performance for CO₂ was determined. The spaghetti-like and randomly oriented CNs were homogeneously grown onto ACFs. The pre-immersion of cobalt(II) ions for ACFs made the CNs grow above with a large ...

In this work, three types of natural clays including kaolinite, montmorillonite, and illite with different molecular structures, as adsorbents, are selected for the removal of methylene blue dye, and their performance is investigated. Also the optimization and the analysis of the dye adsorption mechanism are performed using the response surface methodology, molecular modeling, and experimental ...
