Antigens of the ABO blood group system (i.e., A, B, and H antigens) and Rhesus factor were discovered more than one century ago by karl & steiner [1,2] who is considering the father of transfusion medicine, and with this discovery he enabling physicians to transfuse blood without endangering the patient′s life. The ABO antigens are defined by carbohydrate moieties on the extracellular surface o...

ABO blood groups and secretor status are important in clinical and forensic medicine and in relation to some diseases. There are geographic and racial differences in their frequencies, but the frequency of secretor status in different ABO blood group systems has not been determined yet. Therefore, the aim of this study was mainly to determine this point. Blood and saliva from 762 randomly selec...

Hepatitis B and HIV infection are two viral infections that represent real global public health problems. In order to improve their management, some hypotheses suggest that genetic predispositions like ABO and Rh blood groups would influence the occurrence of these diseases. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between ABO and Rhesus blood groups and the susceptibility to...

Background: The ABO blood group system was the first human blood group system to be discovered by Landsteiner in 1900. The second type of blood group is the rhesus system. There are only two Rh phenotype such as Rh positive and Rh negative, depending on whether Rh antigen is present on the red cell or not. The frequency of ABO and Rh phenotypes in different populations has been extensively stud...

Other than being present at the surface of red blood cells, the antigens of the ABO blood group system are efficiently expressed by a variety of human cells and tissues. Several studies recently described the involvement of the ABO blood group in the pathogenesis of many human disorders, including cardiovascular disease and cancer, so that its clinical significance extends now beyond the tradit...

BACKGROUND Characterization of the ABO blood group at the phenotype and genotype levels is clinically essential for transfusion, forensics, and population studies. This study elucidated ABO phenotypes and genotypes, and performed an evaluation of their distribution in individuals from the western region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS One-hundred and seven samples underwent standard serological tech...

The importance of determination of ABO Blood Groups in antenatal patients is considered, particularly in the context of the diagnosis of ABO mediated haemolytic disease of the newborn and blood transfusion during pregnancy and delivery. It is concluded that the investigation is of little benefit to either patient or doctor, and that it should be abandoned as part of routine antenatal procedures.

von Willebrand factor (vWF) is synthesized exclusively by endothelial cells and megakaryocytes, and stored in the intracellular granules or constitutively secreted into plasma. ABO blood group antigens are covalently associated with asparagine-linked sugar chains of plasma vWF. The effect of ABO-mismatched bone marrow transplantation (BMT) or blood stem cell transplantation (BSCT) on the expres...

Background: The ABO blood group antigens play a role in thepathophysiology of some diseases and several researches haveinvestigated this relationship in the field of dermatology. In thepresent study, an attempt was made to find the distribution ofblood types in patients with pemphigus vulgaris and chronicplaque type psoriasis.Method: Fifty patients with chronic plaque type psoriasis, 50patients...
