Clostridium difficile strain ribotype 027 is a hypervirulent pathogen that is responsible for recent, severe outbreaks of serious nosocomial infections. As a foundation for the development of a preventative carbohydrate-based vaccine, we have synthesized a pentasaccharide cell wall repeating unit from PS-I unique to this strain, by the linear assembly of four monosaccharide building blocks.

Activation of the cannabinoid CB1 receptor (CB1) is modulated by aspartate residue D2.63(176) in transmembrane helix (TMH) 2. Interestingly, D2.63 does not affect the affinity for ligand binding at the CB1 receptor. Studies in class A G protein-coupled receptors have suggested an ionic interaction between residues of TMH2 and 7. In this report, modeling studies identified residue K373 in the ex...

BACKGROUND Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) can cause severe disease and death, especially in older adults. A better understanding of risk factors for adverse outcomes is needed. This study tests the hypotheses that infection with specific ribotypes and presence of stool toxins independently associate with severity and constructs predictive models of adverse outcomes. METHODS Cases of no...

Clostridium difficile is the main cause of antibiotic-associated disease, a disease of high socio-economical importance that has recently been compounded by the global spread of the 027 (BI/NAP1/027) ribotype. C. difficile cases attributed to ribotype 027 strains have high recurrence rates (up to 36 %) and increased disease severity. The hamster model of infection is widely accepted as an appro...

Hairy root disease (HRD) caused by rhizogenic Agrobacterium biovar 1 strains affect tomato, cucumber, eggplant, and bell pepper grown in hydroponic greenhouses can cause considerable yield losses worldwide. Recently, Paenibacillus xylanexedens (ST15.15/027 AD117) with antagonistic activity against agrobacteria were identified. In this study, we present results of greenhouse trials two consecuti...

BACKGROUND Clostridium difficile is the most common infectious etiology of nosocomial diarrhea. Fecal calprotectin (fc) is a sensitive marker of intestinal inflammation, found to be associated with enteric bacterial infections and inflammatory bowel disease. METHODS We evaluated fc levels using a Chemiluminescent immunoassay method, in hospitalized patients with C. difficile infection (CDI) d...

BACKGROUND Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the leading cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea, and several outbreaks with increased severity and mortality have been reported. In this study we report a C. difficile PCR ribotype 027 outbreak in Portugal, aiming to contribute to a better knowledge of the epidemiology of this agent in Europe. METHODS Outbreak report with retrospective s...
