OBJECTIVE Seroprevalence of H. pylori infection in Iran exceeds 65% of pediatric population. In this study, we intended to find association between the virulence genes (cagA and vacA) and clinical presentations. METHODS H. pylori isolates were achieved from the gastric mucosa of children. In each case, the gastric biopsy specimens were cultured and the organisms identified. Detection of diffe...

background: gastric cancer (gc) is the fifth common malignant disease and the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the world. ardabil, a northwestern province of iran, includes the highest rate of gc within the country. helicobacter pylori (h. pylori) vaca gene plays a major role in generating and maintaining the gastric inflammatory response , which alters the enteric nervous sys...

The Helicobacter pylori virulence gene, cagA, and active forms of the vacuolating cytotoxin gene, vacA, are major determinants of pathogenesis. However, previous studies linking these factors to disease risk have often included patients using aspirin/nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) or acid-suppressing drugs, both of which may confound results. Also, particularly for gastric cance...

We read with interest the recent article by Memon et al. (1). In this study involving the Belgian population, the Helicobacter pylori vacuolating cytotoxin (vacA) genotype was shown to be a strong marker for gastric cancer and duodenal ulcer disease. The finding that certain H. pylori vacA-positive strains are associated with key clinical outcomes is important, but available data are unfortunat...

helicobacter pylori has been strongly associated with peptic ulcer diseases, chronic gastritis, ulcers, and reported as a risk factor for gastric cancer, too. the vaculating cytotoxin (vaca), the cytotoxin associated genes (caga), the induced by contact with epithelium factor antigen (icea gene), blood adhesion binding antigen (baba2), and outer membrane protein oipa have been described as diff...

The vacA genotypes s1,m1 and s1,m2 were detected in 44 and 30% of Helicobacter pylori isolates, respectively, from patients with gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, compared to 26 and 56% of isolates, respectively, from individuals with gastritis. The vacA s1 genotype was significantly associated with, but not predictive of, the presence of vacuolating cytotoxin activity.

Gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric cancer are a few of the diverse disease manifestations that have been shown to be associated with infection by Helicobacter pylori. Why some individuals develop more severe forms of disease remains largely unknown. In this study, 225 South Korean strains were genotyped for vacA and then analyzed to determine if particular genotypes varied across dise...

Genetic diversity in Helicobacter pylori strains may affect the function and antigenicity of virulence factors associated with bacterial infection and, ultimately, disease outcome. In this study, DNA diversity of H. pylori isolates was examined by analysis of vacA genotypes and by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of H. pylori-associated genes (vacA, cagA,flaA, ureAB, and...

The aim of this study was to determine the presence of Helicobacter pylori cytotoxin-associated gene (cagA)/vacuolating cytotoxin gene (vacA) among patients with chronic gastritis in Cuba and Venezuela. Gastric antrum biopsies were taken for culture, DNA extraction and PCR analysis. Amplification of vacA and cagA segments was performed using two regions of cagA: 349 bp were amplified with the F...

Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative rod associated with gastroduodenal pathologies, such as gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric adenocarcinoma. Although most H. pylori infections are clinically silent, the organism is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. It is unknown why the bacteria are able to produce severe disease in some hosts and be innocuous in others. Different viru...
