The frequencies of mitomycin C and cyclophosphamide-induced kidney and gill erythrocyte micronuclei were compared in Tilapia rendalli and Oreochromis niloticus. Cyclophosphamide (CP) and mitomycin C (MMC) were previously used to investigate fish sensitivity to micronuclei induction in kidney erythrocytes. Fish were treated with a single dose of cyclophosphamide (40 mg/kg) or mitomycin C (2 mg/k...

In this study, the influence of different treatments was evaluated: nonwashing, washing in chlorinated water and washing/soaking in chlorinated water and sodium chloride on the quality of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fillets during storage at 1.0 ± 0.5°C through daily analysis of pH, moisture, and lipids content. Microbiological analysis and growth modeling for mesophilic and psychrotro...

This paper is the first attempt to quantify the levels and the distribution pattern of lindane in the surface water, sediment and fish (Chrysichthys furcatus and Tilapia zilli). The samples were collected from three stations (Ovwian, Ekakpamre, and Ovu) of the Warri River in the western Niger Delta of Nigeria in 2006: during the dry (January-April) and wet seasons (May-August). The analysis inc...

One of the many unintended consequences of global commerce has been the translocation of countless plants and animals to new regions, continents, and oceans [1,2]. Such “exotic” species have colonized nearly every habitat on Earth, and modern ecosystems are now made up largely of species originating from geographically distinct regions [3–5]. Most exotic species have negligible or no negative e...

Aquatic systems are affected by a variety of anthropogenic activities that decrease water quality through the introduction of organic and inorganic pollutants. To investigate the relationship between fish parasite communities and water quality, metazoan parasites were examined in 140 specimens of the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) sampled in three lakes in the Limpopo Province...

Since its identification in 1999, ghrelin has been identified in all vertebrate groups. The "active core" of ghrelin is highly conserved among vertebrates, suggesting its biological activity to be also conserved. In fish, both acylated forms of ghrelin have been identified; however, the ratio of the ghrelin-C8 to ghrelin-C10 is not as great as observed in mammals. In the tilapia (Oreochromis mo...

This is the first report of outbreaks of Streptococcus iniae in Nile tilapia farms in South America. Seven isolates were identified by biochemical, serological and molecular tests. Their 16S rRNA gene sequences showed 100% similarity with S. iniae ATCC 29178 and two distinct PFGE patterns were observed for Brazilian isolates.

The anaerobic metabolism and its link with lactate and glycogen/glucose levels of muscles, liver and blood were quantitatively analyzed in tilapia, O. mossambicus under four different oxygen concentrations 5.20 + 0.65 (control), 3.66 + 0.55, 2.53 + 0.69 and 1.58 + 0.41 and recovery after 2 hrs (3.78 + 0.46) . The glycogen levels of muscle and liver reduced drastically at the oxygen level of 3.6...

Recent studies have highlighted both the positive and negative impacts of species invasions. Most of these studies have been conducted on either immobile invasive plants or sessile fauna found at the base of food webs. Fewer studies have examined the impacts of vagile invasive consumers on native competitors. This is an issue of some importance given the controlling influence that consumers hav...
