OBJECTIVE Providing adequate soft tissue cover while preventing wound breakdown and infection can present a challenge when repairing large meningomyeloceles. Adding an extra barrier to protect the underlying dural elements in the event of complications should lower the morbidity and mortality associated with large repairs, which are at risk of dehiscence and subsequent exposure of the neural el...
Stoma reversal is a commonly performed procedure. Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common complications following stoma reversal with reported incidence of up to 41% [1,2]. Surgical site infection leads to increased medical cost, requires additional wound care and extra medications. It might also prolong length of hospital stay and adversely affect quality of life [3,4]. Followi...
An interrupted stitch type with favorable tissue characteristics will reduce local wound complications. We describe a novel high-strength, low-tension repair for the interrupted closure of skin, cartilage, and muscle, the double loop mattress stitch, and compare it experimentally with other interrupted closure methods. The performance of the double loop mattress technique in porcine cartilage a...
OBJECTIVES Wound infection in the setting of immunosuppressed state such as renal transplantation (RT) causes significant morbidity from sepsis, prolongs hospital stay and is expensive. Vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) therapy is a new technique of management of wound based on the principle of application of controlled negative pressure. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of VAC ther...
RESULTS: Fourteen patients were identified. Median operating time for the PTO flap was 49 min. There were no cases of flap loss, donor site morbidity or major wound complications. Superficial skin dehiscence and perineal hernia formation were reported in 2 patients respectively. None of the patients developed chronic perineal pain. All patients reported excellent satisfaction with the aesthetic...
Sternomy represents the standard approach to the heart and great vessels in most cardiothoracic procedures. Closure of this incision is simple; however, healing complications such as dehiscence, osteomyelitis, mediastinitis, and superficial wound infection or fistula may occur. We describe an alternative technique for sternal closure using semirigid fixation with thermoreactive clips.
