The Internet is fast becoming the de facto content delivery network of the world, supplanting TV and physical media as the primary method of distributing larger files to ever-increasing numbers of users at the fastest possible speeds. Recent trends have, however, posed challenges to various players in the Internet content delivery ecosystem. These trends include exponentially increasing traffic...
Replaying or simulation using web traffic logs are common methods of evaluating proxy caches. Request traces are also used to characterize typical web workloads. Unfortunately, most common, publicly available request logs have serious deficiencies because of what is omitted from the logs. In this paper we enumerate a number of these deficiencies and examine the benefits of more complete logs. A...
In this tutorial paper, we present the application of well-known DSP techniques used in lower speed wireline and wireless applications, to high-speed optical communications. After an introduction on today’s optical network architecture and typical optical channel impairments, we study techniques such as fiber equalization, maximum likelihood detection, and current and next generations Forward E...
The Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) speech codec algorithm has been selected for wideband speech coding in wireless and wireline services by both 3GPP and ITU-T. This paper describes an implementation of floating point Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) codec that was approved by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for multimedia applications.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) logs are well logs that use nuclear magnetic resonance to accurately measure free fluid, irreducible water (MBVI), and effective porosity (MPHI). Permeability is then calculated using a mathematical function that incorporates these measured properties. This paper describes the methodology developed to generate synthetic magnetic resonance imaging logs using data...
Before possible multi-well pilots and full field-scale implementation, chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects usually follow an incremental screening procedure from the laboratory through single-well pilots. Laboratory-scale core floods at reservoir conditions validate surfactant performance before committing to field trials. However, in single short plugs, volumetric averages do not cor...

We present polynomial time algorithms that maximize the aggregate throughput in single-source multicast networks that employ random network coding and are subject to Byzantine attacks. Our results are applicable to wireline and wireless networks, assume no restrictions on size of min-cut from the source to the receivers and are provably optimal.
