We report the vitreous concentration of bevacizumab after injection for the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). A premature neonate diagnosed with type 1 ROP was treated in both eyes with 0.625 mg intravitreal bevacizumab injection at 32 weeks' postconceptual age. Eleven weeks later there was complete regression clinically, but the patient died. Vitreous samples taken at autopsy reve...

We report a 61-year-old Japanese woman with transthyretin (TTR) Val33-related familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP). She presented with late-onset, vitreous involvement as the initial manifestation, slow development of polyneuropathy, cardiomyopathy, and severe autonomic failure without carpal tunnel syndrome. Liver transplantation was performed and her postoperative course was stable. Taken to...

Results: The mean±SD moxifloxacin concentrations in plasma (n=15), vitreous (n=13), and aqueous (n=13) samples were 3.56±1.31 μg/mL, 1.34±0.66 μg/mL, and 1.58±0.80 μg/mL, respectively. Mean±SD sampling times after oral administration of the second moxifloxacin tablet for plasma, vitreous, and aqueous were 2.94±0.81 hours, 3.77±0.92 hours, and 3.71±0.89 hours, respectively. The percentages of pl...

Materials and Methods: Subjects were 21 patients who had retinal detachment with SPT. Their follow-up terms were all greater than 3 months. We undertook the crocodile technique during their subretinal surgery. The crocodile technique is a new ophthalmic technique for removing SPT using vitreous forceps, without using subretinal forceps, in small-gauge vitrectomy. After performing sufficient per...

B-scan ultrasound of the posterior segment is reported in 154 patients with severe diabetic eye disease. Epiretinal fibrosis, vitreous haemorrhage, vitreous detachment, and retinal detachment were frequently diagnosed. The ultrasonic findings are discussed in relation to the pathological changes in the vitreous in proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate vitreous glutamate concentration and axon loss in monkeys with experimental glaucoma. METHODS We induced unilateral chronic glaucoma by means of laser trabecular destruction in 14 rhesus and 6 cynomolgus monkeys. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was monitored weekly. We assessed optic nerve damage clinically and photographically. Vitreous, sampled immediately before enucleatio...

AIM To evaluate the influence of oxidative stress on extrapituitary growth hormone (GH) secretion in the eye and to analyze the interdependence between eye and serum GH levels under normal and hypoxic conditions. METHODS Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) was performed in 32 patients with developed proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and 49 non-diabetic controls, both of whom required this proc...

OBJECTIVE To determine the cellular mechanism that allows subretinal hemorrhage to cloud the vitreous. METHODS We simulated subretinal hemorrhage in a rabbit model by injecting autologous blood beneath the retina. At the first appearance of a cloud in the vitreous a vitrectomy was performed and using a surgical microscope, the retina was searched for breaks. After enucleation and fixation, th...

BACKGROUND We encountered a rare patient with lens luxation in which the lens had become stuck on the optic disc. Findings obtained during vitreous surgery suggested that the luxated lens had become stuck on the optic disc via residual vitreous gel. CASE PRESENTATION An 88-year-old Japanese man experienced lens luxation into the inferior vitreous cavity while undergoing treatment for glaucoma...

BACKGROUND/AIM Little is known about biochemical markers related to change in visual acuity after vitrectomy. The potential use of transthyretin (TTR), a carrier of the retinol/retinol-binding protein, as a biochemical marker protein, was investigated. METHODS TTR was measured using immunonephelometry in a group of patients (n = 77) in longstanding (>1 week) retinal detachment (n = 29), fresh...
