A wide variety of plant and human bacterial pathogens use a specialized 'type III' protein secretion system to deliver virulence factors into host cells. Appendage-like surface structures have recently been identified on several bacterial pathogens and there are indications that these may be conduits for virulence factor delivery.
introduction and aims: helicobacter pylori commonly is associated with gastritis: but only sometimes it causes clinically significant diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcer. the development of disease depends on the virulence of the infecting h. pylori strain, the susceptibility of the host, and environment co-factors. the cytotoxin associated protein encoded by caga gene is an important v...
The esat-6 and cfp-10 genes are essential for virulence in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Among nontuberculous mycobacteria, we found these genes only in M. kansasii, M. szulgai, M. marinum, and M. riyadhense, with unique sequences. This adds a phylogenetic and taxonomical characteristic and may represent a virulence factor for nontuberculous mycobacteria.
