Fluorescence microscopy is commonly used for imaging live mammalian cells. Here, we describe studies aimed at revealing the potential genotoxic effects of standard fluorescence microscopy. To assess DNA damage, a high throughput platform for single cell gel electrophoresis is used (e.g., the CometChip). Light emitted by three standard filters was studied: (a) violet light [340-380 nm], used to ...

A piperazine-modified Crystal Violet was found to be able to selectively inactivate Gram-negative bacteria upon visible light irradiation but left Gram-positive bacteria less damaged, which can serve as a blueprint for the development of novel narrow-spectrum agents to replenish the current arsenal of photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT).

Enhancement in the performance of Silicon solar cell can be achieved via luminescent down-shifting (LDS) of the incident light. Lumogen Violet dye and Tb(ant)3.2H2O complex were characterized to determine their suitability for inclusion in LDS layers. LDS layer characterization techniques are discussed and preliminary results from PV cell/LDS layer devices are presented.

Miller (1911), Parsons (1911), Parkes Weber (1912), Naish (1912), and Barber (1913) reported cases in the next year, and since then a large number of cases have been described in England, Canada, the United States and recently in France, Germany and Norway. The important papers by Barber (1920, 1926, 1933) and Parsons (1927), and the reviews by Mitchell (1930), Hamperl and Wallis (1933) give an...

DESCRIPTION ISOPTIN SR (verapamil hydrochloride) is a calcium ion influx inhibitor (slow channel blocker or calcium ion antagonist). ISOPTIN SR is available for oral administration as light green, capsule shaped, scored, film-coated tablets containing 240 mg verapamil hydrochloride, as light pink, oval shaped, scored, film-coated tablets containing 180 mg verapamil hydrochloride, and as light v...

1. The permeability of Paramecium to NH(4)OH is greater when the cells are exposed to light than it is when they are in darkness. 2. This change can be demonstrated in cells exposed to monochromatic red light, though it is small. It becomes greater as the wave lengths shorten, and is greatest in the near ultra-violet. 3. The permeability increases as the duration of exposure to light is prolong...

The shortest-wavelength color of light that is visible to the human eye is violet. As shown in Fig. 1, light with wavelengths shorter than 400 nm is called ultraviolet (UV) light: that from 300 to 400 nm is called near-UV light, that from 200 to 300 nm is called deep-UV light, and that shorter than 200 nm is called vacuum-UV light. Since vacuum-UV is absorbed by air, deep-UV light is the shorte...
