Provisioning of good quality care to the elderly population and at the same time reducing the pressure on the health care expenditures is a challenging issue for governments today. Many ICT supported, distant care systems (eCare) have been proposed but few have found their way to the market. The problem is to provide a viable business case for each actor involved (including eCare platform, heal...
background: all aerobically growing organisms suffer from exposure to oxidative stress, caused by partially reduced forms of molecular oxygen, known as reactive oxygen species (ros). these are highly reactive and capable of damaging cellular constituents such as dna, lipids and proteins. consequently, cells from many different organisms have evolved mechanisms to protect their components agains...

The endogenous cardiac steroid-like compounds, endogenous ouabain (EO) in particular, are present in the human circulation and are considered putative ligands of the inhibitory binding site of the plasma membrane Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase. A vast amount of data shows that, when added to cell cultures, these steroids promote the growth of cardiac, vascular, and epithelial cells. However, the involvement...
The principles of design discussed here are far from new, and a debt to prior authors is fully acknowledged. Among those I have found most helpful are Raymond Unwin (Town Planning in Practice, 1908), Werner Hegemann (Civic Art, 1922), and Gorden Cullen (Townscape, (1961). The insights of more contemporary practitioners such as Doug Kelbaugh (Common Place, 1997), Peter Calthorpe and William Fult...
We discuss the conditions for a non-vanishing Dirac phase δ and mixing angle θ13, sources of CP violation in neutrino oscillations, to be uniquely responsible for the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe through leptogenesis. We show that this scenario, that we call δ-leptogenesis, is viable when the degenerate limit (DL) for the heavy right-handed (RH) neutrino spectrum is cons...
by Daniel Friedman and Nirvikar Singh Economics Department UC Santa Cruz May 21, 1999 Abstract Using a simple symmetric game to illustrate, we point out shortcomings in previous theoretical accounts of how the human vengeance motive survives despite a free rider problem. We offer a new theoretical explanation involving the coevolution of genes that determine the capacity for vengeance and memes...
Infection with Baylisascaris procyonis roundworms is rare but often fatal and typically affects children. We attempted to determine parameters of viability and methods of inactivating the eggs of these roundworms. Loss of viability resulted when eggs were heated to 62°C or desiccated for 7 months but not when frozen at -15°C for 6 months.
We consider a collusive arrangement as an agreement by the players of a game to restrict their choices to certain subsets of their strategy sets. A (collusive) scheme is the Cartesian product of such strategy subsets. We require schemes to be closed under sequential rationality. Using this solution concept, we apply the global game approach (Carlsson and van Damme, 1993) to the infinitely repea...
