Human parainfluenza virus type 3 (HPIV3) genome was detected in 4 baboons in Zambia. Antibody for HPIV3 was detected in 13 baboons and 6 vervet monkeys in 2 distinct areas in Zambia. Our findings suggest that wild nonhuman primates are susceptible to HPIV3 infection.

Myocardial necrosis can be result from a number of causes including nutritional deficiencies, chemical and plant toxins, ischemia and metabolic disorder. The outcome of myocardial necrosis varies depending on the extent of the damage (Donald 2001, Jubb 1993, Radostits 1994, Vanvaleet 1986). Myocardial infarction without demonstrable of atherosclerosis were reported in a rhesus macaque (Gonder 1...

Here we propose a scenario to simulate sign processing in virtual creatures inhabiting a world of predatory events. In order to infer the minimum organizational constraints for the design of our creatures, we examined the well-studied case of semiosis in East African vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) and its possible neuroanatomical substrates. This approach allowed us to simulate a case ...

We propose, based on the Peircean semiotics and inspired by an ethological case, a methodology to simulate the emergence of symbolic predator-warning communication among artificial creatures in a virtual world of predatory events. In order to build a digital ecosystem, and infer the minimum organizational constraints for the design of our creatures, we examined the well-studied case of semiosis...

Asymmetry is a prominent feature of human brains with important functional consequences. Many asymmetric traits show population bias, but little is known about the genetic and environmental sources contributing to inter-individual variance. Anatomic asymmetry has been observed in Old World monkeys, but the evidence for the direction and extent of asymmetry is equivocal and only one study has es...

We have investigated the pathogenicity of tsetse (Glossina pallidipes)-transmitted cloned strains of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense in vervet monkeys. Tsetse flies were confirmed to have mature trypanosome infections by xenodiagnosis, after which nine monkeys were infected via the bite of a single infected fly. Chancres developed in five of the nine (55.6%) monkeys within 4 to 8 days post infec...
