BACKGROUND The purpose of our experiment was to determine whether laser stimulation can improve microcirculation in the posterior regions of the brain in patients with vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI). MATERIAL/METHODS We studied 25 patients (20 female, 5 male, mean age 64) diagnosed with chronic VBI. All were evaluated using the De Klyn test, followed by qualitative assessment of stabilit...

vertebrobasilar insufficiency is the cause of cerebrovascular accidents in 20% of cases. there are few reports regarding spectral doppler indices (sdis) of vertebral arteries (vas) normal blood flow. the objective of this study was to provide basic reference data about sdis of vas normal blood flow separately and in comparison with internal carotid arteries (icas) and common carotid arteries (c...

The primitive carotid-vertebrobasilar anastomoses are primitive embryonic cerebral vessels that temporarily provide arterial supply from the internal carotid artery to the longitudinal neural artery, the future vertebrobasilar artery in the hindbrain. Four types known are the trigeminal, otic, hypoglossal, and proatlantal intersegmental arteries. The arteries are accompanied by their correspond...

BACKGROUND The goal of this study was to determine the reliability of TCD in evaluation of vertebrobasilar arteries in comparison with brain MRA in patients suffering from acute vertebrobasilar stroke. METHODS Samples were patients with definite clinical diagnosis of vertebrobasilar stroke. For all patients brain MRI, MRA and TCD were performed during the first 48 hours of admission. Basilar ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Dissecting vertebrobasilar aneurysms are challenging to treat, and standard treatment modalities remain controversial. We retrospectively evaluated our experience using endovascular techniques to treat these aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS From February 1997 to December 2007, 42 patients with intradural vertebrobasilar dissecting aneurysms underwent endovascular treatm...

Bilateral vestibular loss (BVL) is a relatively uncommon syndrome that may produce problems of balance; unsteady gait, especially in the dark; and visual disorders and/or oscillopsia associated with walking and head movements. Sometimes patients with BVL remain asymptomatic. Ototoxic drugs are the most frequently identified cause of BVL, but there are many other possible causes. The aetiology r...

Vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBD) is an uncommon vasculopathy of unclear aetiology affecting the arterial wall of vertebral and/or basilar arteries, which is easily misdiagnosed. The review summarizes research datas of VBD in recent years respectively from epidemiology, etiology and pathology, diagnosis, clinical manifestation and mechanism, treatment and prognosis, aiming to provide basis f...

Vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBD) is a relatively rare disorder for which unfortunately there is no treatment. Here we describe a case of simultaneous pre- and postchiasmal visual pathway pathology secondary to a space occupying VBD. In addition our patient demonstrates one of the very few cases of VBD compression of the retrochiasmal pathway with no other cranial nerve involvement.
