Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is a form of transient heart failure that clinically mimics acute coronary syndrome and is characterized by left ventricular wall motion abnormalities. The pathophysiology of TCM is not well established. TCM is often preceded by emotional or physical stress and may occur after surgery. We present 3 cases of TCM occurring after head and neck reconstructive surgery....

Cardiac toxicity is a widely reported complication of fluoropyrimidine chemotherapies (5-fluorouracil and capecitabine); however, Takotsubo syndrome (TS) is less widely reported. There is little data available describing the viability of fluoropyrimidine rechallenge after fluoropyrimidine-induced TS. We report the case of Ms X, a 41-year-old woman with metastatic oesophageal cancer, who develop...

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy can be divided in apical ballooning, mid-ventricular ballooning, and rarely in basal ballooning. The role of left anterior descending coronary artery is still in debate. Spasms, myocardial bridging and recurrent segment (wrap-around) LAD have been described in takotsubo cardiomyopathy. 8 patients (4 females, mean age 74.3 ± 9.7 years) with typical apical ballooning in 4...

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM), otherwise cardiomyopathy, apical ballooning syndrome or broken heart syndrome is a reversible cardiomyopathy, predominantly occurs in post-menopausal women and commonly due to emotional or physical stress. Typically, patients present with chest pain and ST elevation or T wave inversion on their electrocardiogram mimicking acute coronary syndrome, but with normal o...

We present a case of takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) with ventricular stand still and atrioventricular block. TTC can mimic ST elevation myocardial infarction and heart failure, but in this case resulted in a severe cardiac conduction disorder and ventricular standstill. This is a recognised but unusual presentation and serves as a lesson to those undertaking anaesthetics to be vigilant for TTC.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is generally considered to have a favorable prognosis. However, several major problems may complicate the clinical course. We present a patient with four simultaneous complications of shock, left ventricular thrombus, left ventricular outflow obstruction, and severe mitral regurgitation. Despite this dramatic presentation, the patient had a complete recovery with resolu...

Neurologic stunned myocardium (NSM) is a phenomenon where neurologic events give rise to cardiac abnormalities. Neurologic events like stroke and seizures cause sympathetic storm and autonomic dysregulation that result in myocardial injury. The clinical presentation can involve troponin elevation, left ventricular dysfunction, and ECG changes. These findings are similar to Takotsubo cardiomyopa...

AIMS Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is an intriguing disease characterized by acute transient left ventricular dysfunction usually triggered by an episode of severe stress. The excessive levels of catecholamines and the overactivation of the sympathetic system are believed to be the main pathophysiologic mechanisms of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, but it is unclear whether there is a structural or functi...

A 75-year-old woman presented with left ventricular apical ballooning syndrome mimicking acute anterior myocardial infarction. She had a long history of chest tightness and was undergoing a contrast stress echocardiogram because of frequent re-admissions with chest pain, all with normal ECGs and troponins. A standard dobutamine/atropine protocol had been used. The patient developed central crus...
