Smart Environments is one of several domains in which Semantic Web technologies are applied nowadays. Ontologies, in particular, are used as core modeling languages for representing devices, systems and environments. Developing such ontologies, that typically involve several device descriptions (individuals) and related information, i.e., individuals of classes contributing to the device model,...

This paper proposes direct learning of image classification from user-supplied tags, without filtering. Each tag is supplied by the user who shared the image online. Enormous numbers of these tags are freely available online, and they give insight about the image categories important to users and to image classification. Our approach is complementary to the conventional approach of manual annot...

The user interface is the most important feature of interaction between users and (AAL) services. Explicitly defined user interfaces are bound to a specific toolkit and programming language or markup language. Thus a separate user interface definition has to be created manually for different classes of I/O devices to be supported. Compared to manual user interface creation, the automatic or sem...

In this study, we present pituitary adenoma volumetry using the free and open source medical image computing platform for biomedical research: (3D) Slicer. Volumetric changes in cerebral pathologies like pituitary adenomas are a critical factor in treatment decisions by physicians and in general the volume is acquired manually. Therefore, manual slice-by-slice segmentations in magnetic resonanc...

In this paper, we describe a commercial vision system for the digitisation and extraction of horizons drawn with coloured pencils on seismic sections. The system combines image processing and statistical pattern recognition techniques together with a graphical user interface to provide a solution that is more accurate, faster and involves less user interaction than the manual method.

We use an EM algorithm to learn user models in a spoken dialog system. Our method requires automatically transcribed (with ASR) dialog corpora, plus a model of transcription errors, but does not otherwise need any manual transcription effort. We tested our method on a voice-controlled telephone directory application, and show that our learned models better replicate the true distribution of use...

We present preliminary research on the relation between written manuals and instructional dialogue, and outline how a manual can be converted into a format which can be used as domain knowledge by a dialogue system, capable of generating both instructional dialogue and monologue. Starting from a short sample text from a manual, we use the TRINDI information state approach (Traum et al., 1999) t...

This manual describes the library of conjugate gradients codes CCGPAK, which solves system of complex linear system of equations. The library is written in FORTRAN90 and is highly portable. The codes are general and provide mechanism for matrix times vector multiplication which is separated from the conjugate gradient iterations itself. It is simple to switch between single and double precision...
