PROBLEM To study the relationship between perinatal prognosis in cases of preterm labor (PTL) and polymicrobial infection in amniotic fluid (AF) and intra-amniotic (IA) inflammation using a highly sensitive and reliable PCR-based method. METHOD OF STUDY To detect prokaryotes using a nested PCR-based method, eukaryote-made thermostable DNA polymerase without bacterial DNA contamination was use...

Endogenous activities of phospholipases A and C in Ureaplasma urealyticum were assayed in cellular fractions of exponential-phase cells. Enzymatic studies indicated that ATPase activity was localized in the plasma membrane fraction and NADH and NADPH dehydrogenase activities were localized in the cytosol fraction. Studies with purified ureaplasma membranes demonstrated that, of three serovars t...

A young woman developed multiple abscesses in her transplanted kidney. Amplification of the 16S rRNA gene with subsequent sequencing revealed Ureaplasma urealyticum as the infectious agent. Microbiological diagnosis and sensitivity testing led to therapy with levofloxacin, resulting in rapid recovery of the patient.

Although considerable attention has been devoted to the urea-hydrolyzing activity of Ureaplasma urealyticum, there is as yet no firmly established function for this enzyme. Present results support the idea that its activity generates a chemical gradient across the membrane which drives adenosine 5'-triphosphate synthesis through a chemiosmotic type of mechanism.

We determined in vitro susceptibilities for ABT-492 and other antimicrobials against Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Mycoplasma fermentans, Mycoplasma hominis, and Ureaplasma species. ABT-492 MICs were < or =1 microg/ml, and the agent was bactericidal against selected isolates of M. pneumoniae and M. hominis. ABT-492 has potential for treatment of infections due to these microorganisms.

We examined the effect of 31 carbohydrates on the growth of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis. Arbutin and its breakdown product, hydroquinone, inhibited growth of both species; the other substrates did not alter the extent of growth. Volatile and nonvolatile end products of carbohydrate metabolism were not detected by gas chromatography.

The prevalence of urogenital mycoplasmas in men with NGU in Upper Silesia (Poland) was studied. Mycoplasmas were detected in 36.7% men (Ureaplasma parvum and Mycoplasma genitalium were found in 30% and 16.7% respectively). Urealyticum urealyticum was not detected. We suggest including M. genitalium in the diagnostic scheme for nongonococcal urethritis (NGU).
