OBJECTIVE Methods to assess beta-cell function in clinical studies are limited. The aim of the current study was to compare a direct measure of insulin secretion with fasting surrogate markers in relation to glucose tolerance status. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS In 1,380 individuals from the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study, beta-cell function was assessed using a frequently sampled in...

The paper first analyses the expanded rough set models in [1,2], proposes a new variable precision limited tolerance model to deal with incomplete information systems based on variable precision limited tolerance relation, that is a more restrictive condition imposed on the similarity between objects by attribute values. It then introduces new definitions of object dependency, knowledge depende...

To improve crop yields and increase of production performance in marginal areas, the use of genetic potential of crops in terms of morphological and physiological characteristics can lead to yield improvement and increase of production performance in areas with saline water and soil salinity. In order to evaluate genotypic variation in growth and physiological traits of different bread wheat cu...

Type 2 diabetes causes significant morbidity and mortality, making diabetes prevention a worthwhile goal. Impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) have high rates of progression to type 2 diabetes. In Olmsted County, MN, 40% of people with a fasting glucose $110 mg/dL progressed to overt diabetes within a 10-year period, compared with 5% of those with fasting glucose ...

We present a method for estimating threshold values for signal detection and classification systems in which a prescribed value of false alarm probability is needed. The threshold values are determined directly from observed test statistic data without knowledge of the probability distribution of the data. Our method uses the concept of tolerance intervals from nonparametric statistics.

The salinity tolerance, hematological and hydromineral regulation capabilities of juvenile Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) were investigated in different ages and sizes in freshwater (FW: <0.5‰), estuary water (EW: 9.5‰) and Caspian Sea water (CSW: 12.5‰). The fish were directly transferred from FW to EW and CSW. The possible repercussions of ion-osmoregulatory processes on some ...

Aims and background: Distress tolerance is an important psychological phenomenon which affects self-regulation processes including cognitive appraisal of emotional or physical states. Given that individuals with tension-type headaches are most likely to have low levels of distress tolerance, the evaluation of this variable is, therefore, very essential as the initial step of treatment in this p...

In this paper we analyze the risk attitude of a group of heterogeneous agents and we develop a theory of comparative collective risk tolerance. In particular, we characterize how shifts in the distribution of individual levels of risk tolerance affect the group’s attitude towards risk. In a model with effi cient risk-sharing and two agents an increase in the level of risk tolerance of one or of...

Despite the advantages of radiotherapy, patients may suffer from a wide range of side-effects due to the presence of many sensitive normal tissues in these regions. If the absorbed dose exceeds the tolerance level in parotid glands and the spinal cord, myelopathy, Lhermitte's sign and xerostomia...
