We report the first high-precision interferometer using large sapphire mirrors, and we present the first direct, broadband measurements of the fundamental thermal noise in these mirrors. Our results agree well with the thermoelastic-damping noise predictions of Braginsky, et al. and Cerdonio et al., which have been used to predict the astrophysical reach of advanced interferometric gravitationa...

In this study we approach a mixed initial-boundary value problem to modeling a three-phase-lag dipolar thermoelastic body. The constitutive laws in this context are given. We establish a uniqueness result and prove a reciprocal theorem. The variational principle obtained in this context is a generalization of the known Gurtin's principle for classical elasticity.

Transformation plasticity in ZrO2, which is responsible for the high strength and high toughness of advanced ZrO2-based ceramics, is reviewed. The tetragonal ~ monoclinic martensitic transformation is of prime importance, but its successful exploitation requires a good deal of microstructural control. Under certain conditions, the transformation can be reversible, autocatalytic, and thermoelast...

We determine the detailed qualitative behavior of radially symmetric equilibrium states with two or more phases for general classes of nonlinear thermoelastic materials. We treat the cases of structured and non-structured interface. Methods are based on a combination of geometric constructions with phase-plane analyses of the governing equations. A special feature of the solutions is that they ...

Introduction. The derivation of the mechanical behavior of a flat plate as the limit behavior of a three-dimensional flat solid whose thickness tends to zero is a well-established theory since the works of Goldenveizer [G] or Ciarlet and Destuynder [CD1], Due attention has been paid to the static response of such plates for various linear or nonlinear mechanical behaviors (Ciarlet-Destuynder [C...

sheet metal components design and manufacture need a great deal of experience and know-how. strip layout design is usually done with trial and error until best design for strip layout is finally achieved. knowledge for the system is formulated from plasticity theories, experimental results, and the empirical knowledge of field experts. in this paper, an algorithm which can automatically design ...

Uncooled microcantilever-based infrared (IR) detectors have recently gained interest due to their low noise equivalent temperature difference (NETD), while concurrently maintaining low costs. These properties have made them available for a wider range of applications. However, the curvature induced by residual strain mismatch severely compromises the device’s performance. Therefore, to meet per...

In this paper, the laser bending process of a circular tube made of mild steel has been investigated experimentally. For this purpose, the effects of the irradiating length and the number of irradiating passes on the main bending angle of a laser bent tube are studied. In addition, the main defects of the laser tube bending process such as lateral bending angle, ovality and thickness variation ...

The present investigation deals  with the reflection and transmission phenomenon due to incident plane longitudinal wave at a plane interface between inviscid fluid half-space and a thermoelastic diffusion solid half-space with dual-phase-lag heat transfer (DPLT) and dual-phase-lag diffusion (DPLD) models. The theory of thermoelasticity with dual-phase-lag heat transfer developed by Roychoudhar...

scape bending disorder is the most important factor affecting postharvest loss of gerbera cut flowers. one of the ultimate reasons for gerbera stem bending is lignin, with deformation structural functions and defensive mechanisms. this postharvest experiment was conducted to evaluate the role of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (pal) and peroxidase (pod) enzymes activity in stem bending of two gerbe...
