DNA and chromosomal damage in peripheral blood leukocytes of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) were investigated by using the single cell gel electrophoresis assay /comet and cytokinesis- block micronucleus (CBMN) assays, respectively. The case-control study comprised patients with CAD (n = 46; average age 53.0 ± 1.27 y) undergoing treatment at local hospitals, and healthy age-and sex...
Excessive alcohol consumption is associated with increased risks of many diseases including cancer. We evaluated oxidative DNA damage in Aldh2 +/+ and Aldh2 -/- mice after they had been subjected to acute ethanol exposure. Olive tail moment, which was measured using a comet assay, was not increased by ethanol treatment in both Aldh2 +/+ and Aldh2 -/- mice. However, after controlling for the eff...
The projection pursuit index defined by a sum of squares of the third and the fourth sample cumulants is known as the moment index proposed by Jones and Sibson [14]. Limiting distribution of the maximum of the moment index under the null hypothesis that the population is multivariate normal is shown to be the maximum of a Gaussian random field with a finite Karhunen-Loève expansion. An approxim...
Dietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFAs) protect against photocarcinogenesis in animals, but prospective human studies are scarce. The mechanism(s) underlying the photoprotection are uncertain, although omega-3 PUFAs may influence oxidative stress. We examined the effect of supplementation on a range of indicators of ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced DNA damage in humans, a...
This paper collects some of the well known probabilistic properties of GARCH(p, q) processes. In particular, we address the question of strictly and of weakly stationary solutions. We further investigate moment conditions as well as the strong mixing property of GARCH processes. Some distributional properties such as the tail behaviour and continuity properties of the stationary distribution ar...
The problem of computing the lower tail of a Gaussian norm is considered in this paper. Based on large deviations arguments, a bound on these tails is derived which is tighter than those obtained by other methods. Conditional exponential moment bounds are also derived and as an application, L 2 type Onsager-Machlup functionals for diiusions are computed.
A saddlepoint approximation of the Student's t-statistic was derived by Daniels and Young [Biometrika 78 (1991) 169–179] under the very stringent exponential moment condition that requires that the underlying density function go down at least as fast as a Normal density in the tails. This is a severe restriction on the approxima-tion's applicability. In this paper we show that this strong expon...
The induction kinetics of genetic damage were measured in one clone of a mammalian cell line (CHO AS52) with three genotoxicity assays, the single cell gel electrophoresis (Comet) assay, laser beam flow cytometry and forward mutation. The first two assays allow for the rapid analysis of genotoxic damage in individual nuclei. The alkaline Comet assay detects DNA strand breaks, alkali-labile site...
This paper describes the construction of a lower bound for the tails of general random variables, using solely knowledge of their moment generating function. The tilting procedure used allows for the construction of lower bounds that are tighter and more broadly applicable than existing tail approximations.
This review provides a compendium of retrievable results of genotoxicity and animal carcinogenicity studies performed of antibacterial, antiviral, antimalarial and antifungal drugs of long-term or intermittent frequent use. Of the 48 drugs considered, 9 (18.75%) do not have retrievable data, whereas the other 39 (81.25%) have at least one genotoxicity or carcinogenicity tests result. Of these 3...
