Previous paleoparasitological studies of Joseon specimens established that the prevalence of Taenia infection was not much different from that of the early 20th century Korean population. As many of taeniases originally diagnosed as Taenia saginata in South Korea were revealed to be actually Taenia asiatica, which share a common intermediate host with T. solium (the pig), Joseon people must hav...

The intestinal helminth fauna of Tibetan sand foxes (Vulpes ferrilata) and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) inhabiting in Qinghai, China, was evaluated by conducting necropsy of hunted foxes and fecal egg examination of field-collected feces. In northeast and south Qinghai, 36 foxes were necropsied, and the species of foxes and the parasites detected were identified by the DNA barcoding. In 27 red fox...

Chronic inflammation of the intestinal mucosa is characteristic of inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Helminth parasites have developed immunomodulatory strategies that may impact the outcome of several inflammatory diseases. Therefore, we investigated whether Taenia crassiceps infection is able to decrease the inflammatory effects of dextran sulfate sod...

The tapeworm Taenia (T.) solium can be responsible for two different conditions: taeniasis and cysticercosis. Helminth infections in human host cause an immune response associated with elevated levels of IgE, tissue eosinophilia and mastocytosis, and with the presence of CD4+ T cells that preferentially produce IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13. Individuals exposed to helminth infections may have allergic ...

Cysticercosis and Taeniosis are global health problems with impacts on human beings and the development of the livestock industry. This study tested the presence of Taenia eggs in the soil of two villages in Iringa rural district, Tanzania. No recognizable Taenia egg was found, though those found were difficult to identify due to absorption of the flotation fluid which made them dark with diffi...

Taenia saginata metacestode antigens have been constituted a useful alternative antigen for neurocysticercosis (NC) serodiagnosis, particularly due to an increasing difficulty to obtain Taenia solium homologous antigen. Cross-reactivity with Echinococcus granulosus infection occurs in homologous and heterologous antigens and could be avoided by using different purified methods. The present stud...

Between 2005 and 2008 cysticercosis caused by Cysticercus bovis was detected in 1485 (0.44%) animals out of 335 436 heads of cattle slaughtered in the Lublin province. This particular cysticercosis was observed each year. In the period 2005-2008 cysticercosis caused by Cysticercus cellulosae was found only in a few pigs (93 cases--0.0059% out of 1 577 370 examined pigs).

Species of tapeworms belonging to the family Taenidae are among the most important helminth parasites of man and domestic animals. Taeniasis and cysticercosis are serious problems of public health and economy in developing countries. The ultimate control of these diseases depends on the development of effective prophylactic vaccines. Although vaccines against bacterial and viral infections are ...
