Biofilm development in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is in part dependent on a filamentous phage, Pf4, which contributes to biofilm maturation, cell death, dispersal and variant formation, e.g., small colony variants (SCVs). These biofilm phenotypes correlate with the conversion of the Pf4 phage into a superinfection (SI) variant that reinfects and kills the prophage carrying host, in contrast to othe...

BACKGROUND The addition of an aminoglycoside to a beta -lactam therapy regimen has been suggested to have a beneficial effect in delaying or preventing the development of antimicrobial resistance. We studied the effect of aminoglycoside/ beta -lactam combination therapy versus beta-lactam monotherapy on the emergence of resistance. METHODS We performed a meta-analysis of randomized, controlle...

Three separate murine sarcoma virus nonproducer cell lines have been isolated which are temperature sensitive for the maintenance of transformation. In each case, a viral rather than a cellular genetic mutation is the reason for the temperature-sensitive effect. Superinfection of one of the mutants with murine leukemia virus overcomes the temperature-sensitive change in the transformed state.

Mature cystic teratoma may be complicated by torsion, rupture, and malignant change, but is rarely complicated by infection. Here we report the case of a patient who presented with a tubo-ovarian abscess following a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure in the setting of an ovarian dermoid cyst.

Sir, The most common bacteria that colonizes and aggravates atopic dermatitis is Staphylococcus aureus, although other bacteria act similarly (1). Interestingly, Acinetobacter species are rarely cultured from atopic dermatitis, although one study found that 40% of health volunteers carried Acinetobacter species on their bodies, with A. lwoffii being the most common (2). We report a child with a...

Empirical observations and theoretical studies suggest that viruses may use different replication strategies to amplify their genomes, which impact the dynamics of mutation accumulation in viral populations and therefore, their fitness and virulence. Similarly, during natural infections, viruses replicate and infect cells that are rarely in suspension but spatially organized. Surprisingly, most...
