A. We study the surface area of an ellipsoid in E as the function of the lengths of theirmajor semi-axes. Wewrite down an explicit formula as an integral over Sn−1, use the formula to derive convexity properties of the surface area, to sharpen the estimates given [6], to produce asymptotic formulas in large dimensions, and to give an expression for the surface in terms of the Lauricella ...

Boundary labeling is a relatively new labeling method. It can be useful in automating the production of technical drawings and medical drawings, where it is common to explain certain parts of the drawing with text labels, arranged on its boundary so that other parts of the drawing are not obscured. In boundary labeling, we are given a rectangle R which encloses a set of n sites. Each site s is ...

We present the initial results from our search for high redshift, z & 6, quasars using near infrared data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS). Our analysis of 106 deg of sky from Data Release 1 (DR1) has resulted in the discovery of ULAS J020332.38+001229.2, a luminous (JAB = 20.0, JVega = 19.1, M1450 = −26.2) quasar at z = 5.86. Following candidate selectio...

As developed by Wallace and Dadda, a method for high-speed, parallel multiplication is to generate a matrix of partial products and then reduce the partial products to two numbers whose sum is equal to the final product. The resulting two numbers are then summed using a fast carry-propagate adder. This paper presents Reduced Area multipliers, which employ a modified reduction scheme that result...

We prove some generic properties for Cr , r = 1, 2, . . . ,∞, areapreserving diffeomorphism on compact surfaces. The main result is that the union of the stable (or unstable) manifolds of hyperbolic periodic points are dense in the surface. This extends the result of Franks and Le Calvez [8] on S to general surfaces. The proof uses the theory of prime ends and Lefschetz fixed point theorem.

A tonography device, based on the MacKay-Marg tonometer, has been constructed which will applanate the cornea to a preselected area of 5.0 to 6.0 mm diameter and maintain that applanation area. The pressure decrease with time should resemble the pressure decrease following bolus injection of fluid into the eye. In most cases the pressure decreased in a linear slope, abruptly terminating in a pr...

We determine the equilibria of a rigid loop in the plane, subject to the constraints of fixed length and fixed enclosed area. Rigidity is characterized by an energy functional quadratic in the curvature of the loop. We find that the area constraint gives rise to equilibria with remarkable geometrical properties; not only can the Euler-Lagrange equation be integrated to provide a quadrature for ...

Leaf area index (LAI) is a key structural characteristic of forest ecosystems because of the role of green leaves in controlling many biological and physical processes in plant canopies. Accurate LA1 estimates are required in studies of ecophysiology, atmosphere-ecosystem interactions, and global change. The objective of this paper is to evaluate LA1 values obtained by several research teams us...
