We introduce a game theoretical model of stealing interactions. We model the situation as an extensive form game when one individual may attempt to steal a valuable item from another who may in turn defend it. The population is not homogeneous, but rather each individual has a different Resource Holding Potential (RHP). We assume that RHP not only influences the outcome of the potential aggress...

We develop a model in which competitive pressure is a catalyst for organizational change. In our model, commitment to a narrow business strategy is valuable because workers need to coordinate their efforts to build a strategy-specific capability. We show that a monopolist may not be able to commit to a focused business strategy. However, introducing competition can make commitment credible, thu...

The fast and frugal heuristics framework assumes that people rely on an adaptive toolbox of simple decision strategies—called heuristics—to make inferences, choices, estimations, and other decisions. Each of these heuristics is tuned to regularities in the structure of the task environment and each is capable of exploiting the ways in which basic cognitive capacities work. In doing so, heuristi...

Strategic Sophistication of Individuals and Teams in Experimental Normal-Form Games We present an experiment on strategic thinking and behavior of individuals and teams in oneshot normal-form games. Besides making choices, decision makers have to state their firstand second-order beliefs. We find that teams play the Nash strategy significantly more often, and their choices are more often consis...

Drawing upon research trips to the Bosnia theatre, this paper compares the actual conduct of Peace Operations (PO) with the theory, based upon Confrontation Analysis, of how they ought to be conducted. A Unified Theory of War-Fighting and PO is proposed. A PO campaign is seen as essentially a sequence of confrontations, whereas a war-fighting campaign is essentially a sequence of battles. But t...

Increasingly, organizations have been investing heavily in information systems for greater dyadic coordination and cooperation with each of their key business partners. In this regard, IS research has not kept pace with important theoretical developments in business strategy literature, with little cumulative work being done on the development of a corresponding “business value of IOS” theoreti...

In this paper we propose a model in which there are ideological and strategic voters who vote under poportional rule. We prove that the behavior of ideological voters matters for the determination of the outcome. We show that a subset of strategic voters partially counteracts the votes of the ideological voters. In this paper we investigate how observable cognitive skills influence the development of strategic sophistication. To answer this question, we study experimentally how psychometric measures of theory-of-mind and cognitive ability (or ‘fluid intelligence’) work together with age to determine the strategic ability and level-k behavior of children in a variety of incentivized strategic interactio...

Strategic agents in incomplete-information environments have a conflicted relationship with uncertainty: it can keep them unpredictable to their opponents, but it must also be overcome to predict the actions of those opponents. We use a multivariate generalization of information theory to characterize the information processing behavior of strategic reasoning experts. We compare expert and novi...
