BACKGROUND Estimating the reduction in levels of infection during implementation of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) control programmes is important to measure their performance and to plan interventions. Markov modelling techniques have been used with some success to predict changes in STH prevalence following treatment in Viet Nam. The model is stationary and to date, the prediction has been o...

Let X (n,m) (1,d) denote the Segre-Veronese embedding of Pn×Pm via the sections of the sheaf O(1, d). We study the dimensions of higher secant varieties of X (n,m) (1,d) and we prove that there is no defective sth secant variety, except possibly for n values of s. Moreover when (m+d d ) is a multiple of (m+ n+ 1), the sth secant variety of X (n,m) (1,d) has the expected dimension for every s.

Neglected intestinal helminth infections afflict the marginalized communities in Asia. Since 2004, growing body of evidence in Myanmar indicated high prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infections (30-40%) among school children. Co-existence of STH (23%) with food-borne trematodes was noted among 383 pregnant women in a selected township in 2012-2014 followed by molecular verificatio...

Plecanatide is a recently developed guanylate cyclase-C (GC-C) agonist and the first uroguanylin analog designed to treat chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). GC-C receptors are found across the length of the intestines and are thought to play a key role in fluid regulation and electrolyte balance. Ligands of the GC-C receptor include end...

BACKGROUND Polyparasitism can lead to severe disability in endemic populations. Yet, the association between soil-transmitted helminth (STH) and the cumulative incidence of Schistosoma japonicum infection has not been described. The aim of this work was to quantify the effect of misclassification error, which occurs when less than 100% accurate tests are used, in STH and S. japonicum infection ...

Responses of rat entopeduncular nucleus (EP) neurons after stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STh) and the morphology of the EP neurons were studied using brain slice preparations. EP neurons were classified into two types based on their electrophysiological properties as reported previously. Of 87 EP neurons, 72 were Type I and the rest were Type II. Synaptic responses to STh stimulation ...

BACKGROUND Schistosome infection and soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are major public health problems in many developing countries where they contribute to the suffering of populations living in poor settings. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in four rural villages in central region of Kenya to provide information on the status of schistosome and STH infections. Previous studies conduct...

BACKGROUND Nutritional interventions targeting the critical growth and development period before two years of age can have the greatest impact on health trajectories over the life course. Compelling evidence has demonstrated that interventions investing in maternal health in the first 1000 days of life are beneficial for both mothers and their children. One such potential intervention is deworm...

Short-term habituation (STH) is the decrease in behavioral responding observed during repeated stimulation at regular intervals. For siphon-elicited siphon withdrawal in Aplysia (S-SWR), we previously showed that the amplitude of responses measured in LFS-type siphon motor neurons (LFS MNs) during training is dependent on the stimulus interval used and is training-site specific. The major sourc...
