We present a catalog of distances for 19544 K giants drawn from LAMOST DR8. Most them are located in the halo Milky Way up to ~120~kpc. There 15% without SDSS photometry, which we supplements with Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) photometry calibrated photometric system. The possible contamination red clumps/horizontal branch removed according metallicities and colors before distance determination. Combining ...
Abundances of C, N, and O are determined in four bright red giants that span the known abundance range for light (Na and Al) and s-process (Zr and La) elements in the globular cluster NGC 1851. The abundance sum C+N+O exhibits a range of 0.6 dex, a factor of 4, in contrast to other clusters in which no significant C+N+O spread is found. Such an abundance range offers support for the Cassisi et ...
Abstract Light escaping from a gravitational potential suffers redshift with magnitude proportional to the depth of potential. This “gravitational redshift” is easily measurable in dense stars such as white dwarfs, but much weaker and has evaded unambiguous detection main-sequence stars. I show that effect directly Gaia DR3 radial velocities (RVs) components wide binary In sample ∼500 binaries ...
Results from high resolution spectroscopic analysis of HD 77361 are reported. The LTE analysis shows that HD 77361 is a K giant of atmospheric parameters: Teff = 4580 ± 75 K, log g = 2.5 ± 0.1, and ξt = 1.40 ± 0.5 km s . We found that the atmosphere of HD 77361 is highly enriched in Li with log ǫ (Li) = 3.82 ± 0.1. With this finding the total number of super Li-rich K giants (log ǫ(Li) ≥ 3.3 IS...
We present an abundance analysis based on high resolution spectra of 8 stars selected to span the full range in metallicity in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We find [Fe/H] for the sample stars ranges from −1.5 to −3.0 dex. Combining our sample with previously published work for a total of 14 luminous Draco giants, we show that the abundance ratios [Na/Fe], [Mg/Fe] and [Si/Fe] for the Draco...
Based on a new and large sample of optical and near-infrared spectra obtained at the Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories (Lançon & Wood 1998; Lançon & Wood, in preparation), spectrophotometric properties of cool oxygenand carbon-rich Long Period Variables and supergiants are presented. Temperatures of oxygen-rich stars are assigned by comparison with synthetic spectra computed from up...
The formation of gas giant planets is assumed to be preceded by the emergence of solid cores in the conventional sequential-accretion paradigm. This hypothesis implies that the presence of earth-like planets can be inferred from the detection of gas giants. A similar prediction cannot be made with the gravitational instability (hereafter GI) model which assumes that gas giants (hereafter giants...
Detailed chemical composition of the open cluster IC 4651: The iron peak, α elements, and Li. Abstract. We present a detailed chemical analysis of 22 stars along the colour-magnitude sequence of the intermediate-age (1.7 Gyr) open cluster IC 4651, based on high-resolution, high S/N ratio spectra from UVES/VLT. IC 4651 thus becomes one of the few open clusters for which a detailed composition an...
We identify “red clump stars” – core helium-burning giants – among 2MASS stars and use them to measure the run of reddening with distance in the direction of each of the Galactic Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXP). We combine this with extinction estimates from X-ray spectroscopy to infer distances and find that the locations of all AXP are consistent with being in Galactic spiral arms. We also find...
