Acute renal failure developed in a diabetic with staphylococcal arthritis and septicaemia in the absence of endocarditis. Renal biopsy showed proliferative glomerulonephritis and there was evidence of alternative pathway of complement activation. Renal function recovered following haemodialysis for 2 months. The association of glomerulonephritis with staphylococcal infection is reviewed.

Daptomycin mean staphylococcal postantibiotic effects (PAEs) were 1.1 to 6.2 h, with a mean of 2.5 h. The mean pneumococcal PAEs were 1.7 h, ranging between 1.0 and 2.5 h. The staphylococcal and pneumococcal postantibiotic sub-MIC effects at 0.4 times the MIC ranged from 3.0 to >12.0 h and 1.9 to >12.0 h, respectively.

Staphylococcal poisoning is a common food-borne disease for which immunoassays to detect enterotoxins were developed, but these assays often lead to false diagnoses due to interferences or lack of specificity. Absolute quantitative mass spectrometry was for the first time successfully applied to an investigation of a staphylococcal outbreak due to coconut pearls.

(-)-Epicatechin gallate (ECg) and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) reduce oxacillin resistance in mecA-containing strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Their binding to staphylococcal cells is enhanced by the nongalloyl analogues (-)-epicatechin (EC) and (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC). EC and EGC significantly increased the capacity of ECg and EGCg to reduce levels of staphylococcal oxacillin resist...

Staphylococcal pyaemia not infrequently complicates staphylococcal lesions, and it is not rare for it to give rise to metastatic abscesses in the lungs and subcutaneous tissues. The following case is considered worth recording, because the patient, a child of just under three years, presented with multiple cold subcutaneous abscesses apparently arising de novo, and unaccompanied by severe syste...

The molecular interactions between staphylococcal phages and host cell surfaces are poorly understood. Employing Staphylococcus aureus teichoic acid mutants, we demonstrate that wall teichoic acid (WTA), but not lipoteichoic acid, serves as a receptor for staphylococcal siphovirus and myovirus, while only the siphovirus requires glycosylated WTA.

Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic largely used to eradicate staphylococcal nasal carriage. Here, we investigated the prevalence of mupirocin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates recovered from patients in different wards in a hospital (Lyon, France), which were determined both phenotypically with an Epsilometer test (Etest) and genetically by PCR for mu...

The superantigenic staphylococcal enterotoxins are important virulence factors and contribute to various diseases, including food poisoning and toxic shock. Dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory agent, attenuated staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB)-induced hypothermia and serum proinflammatory cytokines and improved survival from 0% to 86% in a lethal mouse model of SEB-mediated shock.

Domiati cheese is the most popular type of white soft in Egypt. Staphylococcus aureus a common microorganism that can easily contaminate during processing and distribution. Enterotoxigenic S. strains produce staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE) have been involved food poisoning outbreaks worldwide. The aim present study was to examine inhibitory effect yoghourt starter culture nickel oxide nanopart...

Milk samples of 100 clinically mastitic bovines (50 each from buffaloes and cows) were processed for bacterial isolation. A total of 90 bacterial isolates, including 33 of staphylococci and 57 of other bacterial species were recovered. Of the 33 staphylococcal isolates, 23 were identified as Staphylococcus aureus and 10 as Staphylococcus epidermidis. All Staphylococcus aureus isolates were posi...
