Polyphenols are a wide family of compounds found in fruits and vegetables, wine, tea, cocoa, and extra-virgin olive oil, which exhibit strong antioxidant activity by scavenging different families of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). One of the most effective members of the polyphenol family in terms of free radical scavenging is hydroxytyrosol, 2-(3,4dihydroxyphenyl)ethanol (Fernández-Bolaños et a...

The genome of Nitrosomonas europaea contains at least three copies each of the genes coding for hydroxylamine oxidoreductase (HAO) and cytochrome c554. A copy of an HAO gene is always located within 2.7 kb of a copy of a cytochrome c554 gene. Cytochrome P-460, a protein that shares very unusual spectral features with HAO, was found to be encoded by a gene separate from the HAO genes.

Cyphellophora guyanensis (n = 15), other Cyphellophora species (n = 11), Phialophora europaea (n = 43), and other Phialophora species (n = 12) were tested in vitro against nine antifungal drugs. The MIC(90)s across all of the strains (n = 81) were, in increasing order, as follows: posaconazole, 0.063 μg/ml; itraconazole, 0.5 μg/ml; voriconazole, 1 μg/ml; micafungin, 1 μg/ml; terbinafine, 2 μg/m...

The specific activities of isocitric dehydrogenase, alpha-ketoglutaric dehydrogenase, succinic dehydrogenase, malic dehydrogenase, and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) oxidase were determined in extracts of Nitrosomonas europaea and compared with the corresponding values for Anacystis nidulans and autotrophically grown Hydrogenomonas eutropha. In common with other obligate autot...

Olive lace bugs (Hemiptera: Tingidae) are small sap-sucking insects that feed on wild and cultivated Olea europaea. The diversity of olive bug species in South Africa, the most important producer continent, has been incompletely surveyed. Adult specimens were collected Western Cape province for morphological DNA-based identification, sequencing complete mitogenomes. Cysteochila lineata, Pleroch...

Zoo-FISH with human whole-chromosome paint probes delineated syntenic association of human homologous chromosome segments 3-21, 14-15, 16-19, 4-8, 7-16 and 12-22 (twice) in the European mole (Talpa europaea, Talpidae, Eulipotyphla, Mammalia). These segment associations represent shared ancestral Boreo-Eutherian traits, half of which were previously not described for Eulipotyphla. The karyotype ...

The phenolic composition of olive fruits (Olea europaea L.) (cv. Picual, Villalonga, Alfafarenca, and Cornicabra) grown in different areas of Spain was studied by high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Different levels of tyrosol, catechin, p-coumaric acid, rutin, luteolin, and oleuropein were observed in the different varieties analyzed. Treating the fruit with 0.3% Brotomax...

We developed and tested a methodology to estimate olive (Olea europaea L.) gross primary production (GPP) combining ground and multi-sensor satellite data. An eddy-covariance station placed in an olive grove in central Italy provided carbon and water fluxes over two years (2010–2011), which were used as reference to evaluate the performance of a GPP estimation methodology based on a Monteith ty...
