Efficient control of optical radiation at subwavelength scales plays important roles for various applications. Dielectric nanoparticles or dielectric shells with a large refractive index of n ~ 3-4, which are only achievable for limited semiconductors, are involved in most designs so far to control the scattering by overlapping the electric and magnetic dipolar modes of the same magnitude. Here...

Carbon nanospheres with a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area were fabricated via the pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PAN-PMMA) core-shell nanoparticles. Firstly, PAN-PMMA nanoparticles at high concentration and low surfactant content were controllably synthesized by a two-stage azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN)-initiated semicontinuous emulsion polymer...

Calcium ions react with silicic acid released from dissolving porous silicon nanoparticles to create an insoluble calcium silicate shell. The calcium silicate shell traps and protects an siRNA payload, which can be delivered to neuronal tissues in vitro or in vivo. Gene delivery is enhanced by the action of targeting and cell-penetrating peptides attached to the calcium silicate shell.

Herein we report the development of anisotropic bimetallic nanoparticles where aerosol gold nanoparticles served as the seeds for the continuous deposition of silver atoms on their surfaces. Initially, aerosol gold nanoparticles were formed by spark discharge and then injected into a silver precursor solution in an impinging device. The gold nanoparticles acted as the seed particles, and cataly...

Fluorogenic based nitrobenzofuran-functionalized Ni@SiO(2) core/shell magnetic nanoparticles have been prepared by sol-gel grafting reaction. Their ability to detect and remove metal ions was evaluated by fluorophotometry. The nanoparticles exhibited a high affinity and selectivity for Cu(2+) over competing metal ions. Furthermore, the nanoparticles efficiently removed Cu(2+) in drinking water ...

Inverted soft/hard, in contrast to conventional hard/soft, bi-magnetic core/shell nanoparticles of Mn(x)Fe(3-x)O(4)/Fe(x)Mn(3-x)O(4) with two different core sizes (7.5 and 11.5 nm) and fixed shell thickness (∼0.6 nm) have been synthesized. The structural characterization suggests that the particles have an interface with a graded composition. The magnetic characterization confirms the inverted ...

This contribution reviews plasma polymer nanoparticles produced by gas aggregation cluster sources either via plasma polymerization of volatile monomers or via radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering of conventional polymers. The formation of hydrocarbon, fluorocarbon, silicon- and nitrogen-containing plasma polymer nanoparticles as well as core@shell nanoparticles based on plasma polymers is...

We have demonstrated a facile infiltration process, in which gold nanoparticles are assembled into block copolymer brushes. After solvent annealing, the polymer-covered nanoparticles are either sequestered into the corresponding block copolymer domain or expulsed from the brush, depending on the shell density of the nanoparticles.

Metal nanoshells consists of a dielectric core surrounded by a thin noble metal shell, possess unique optical properties that render nanoshells attractive for use in different technologies. This paper reports a facile method for growth of small gold nanoparticles on the functionalized surface of larger silica nanoparticles. Mono-dispersed silica particles and gold nanoparticles were prepared by...
